Introduction, literature review and study aims
Introduction: Clearly identify the research problem or research question and discuss its significance with your area of planning specialism (and wider context where relevant, especially planning theory). Set out a justification for the investigation and demonstrate that you understand the links between your study and the relevant wider context.
Literature Review: Make a critical assessment of past research reported in relevant literature on the topic and identify gaps and potential for further work. Provide a critical assessment of relevant theories, concepts and approaches. Show the relevance of existing literature to the formulation of your own research questions. The literature review should be issue-led rather than author-led.
Study aims: Provide a tightly focused and realistic aim and identify specific objectives/hypotheses. Outline how the structure of your dissertation will unfold over the remaining chapters.
