This case study requires students to conduct research in order to develop, implement, and evaluate strength and
conditioning programs incorporating body composition outcomes. It focuses on the skills needed to develop a
program which meets the needs of an athlete, group of athletes or those undertaking fitness programs to achieve
personal fitness goals.
Your client can be friends or family or other persons who you already know.
CRITERIA
The assessment task will demonstrate your ability to:
• Demonstrate knowledge of effectively training adults within strength and conditioning
• Effectively communicate and undertake client consultation to effective induct and appraisal your client
• Undertake fitness testing and appraisal and session delivery to industry standard
• Apply strength and conditioning principles to program design and planning
• Review and evaluate performance as well as professional practice
ASSESSMENT TASK INSTRUCTIONS
• This case study is an extensive task. Students are required to undertake 65 hours study to ensure an
adequate response.
• Assignments must be typed.
• The assessment is in 6 tasks. You must attempt tasks and questions.
• Complete the ACSF cover sheet provided by your trainer and submit it with your response.
• Ensure that you read the assessment criteria on the reverse of this form. Students are advised to
complete the task in consultation with these criteria to ensure a comprehensive response.
• You may use your course notes and any other resources available to you.
• The work you submit must be your own. You will be required to sign the sheet confirming that the work

TASK #1 – 1500 words Case Study Scenario Part A
Task one has 7 (seven) questions. You must complete all questions. Consult the checklist before submitting your
case study in order to ensure you have completed all necessary information.
Answer the following questions regarding the case study scenario below
You are currently training athletes in the sport of AFL (Australian Football League) at a semi-professional
level. You are currently liaising with the head Strength and Conditioning Coach who has provided you with
the following information:
• The players are officially coming back to training in January after a Christmas and new year’s
break
• They have maintained their base line of fitness throughout the break through general sport and
recreation activities
• They have previous experience in undertaking strength and conditioning exercises
The team will be training specific skills with the Coach on Monday and Wednesday afternoons, with match
day on Saturday mornings. You have the following key dates to consider:
• Pre-season training begins 30th January
• Competition season starts 1st April
• Finals will begin 1st September
• Season grand final 1st October
• Transition and recovery from 2nd October to 29th January
The Coach and head of Strength and Conditioning have requested you to assist in building up the
strength and conditioning fitness components specific to the sport of AFL over the course of 12 months.
The team just missed out on the grand final last year, however, are aiming to make it this year.
Specifically they also need to improve their power, agility and speed to ensure they are more competitive
in obtaining the hard possessions. Their aerobic fitness has always been a strength together with a
healthy body composition.
The club has full access to a fully equipped gym, a sports oval and indoor pool.
1. Complete the following player profile to assess the current status of a hypothetical AFL athlete of your
choice from the scenario above using the template below which can be found in your student portal under
“Client Profile”.

5. Describe the relevant equipment and resources that you will require throughout your annual training plan.
6. List and describe at least two (2) common injuries that may occur for the particular sport or athlete in
question. Undertake appropriate additional research if required.
7. Outline three (3) motivational techniques you would recommend for the client to adhere to the exercise

TASK #2 – 1000 words Case Study Scenario Part B
In order to complete this task you will need to access and download the periodisation templates required to
answer questions 1, 2 and 3
Task Two has 4 (four) questions. You must complete all questions. Consult the checklist before submitting your
case study in order to ensure you have completed all necessary information.
1. You are now required to plan a long term strength and conditioning training program to meet the
identified needs of the athlete.
The plan must show your understanding of the principles of periodization and include the following:
o Show the breakdown of the mesocycles and their sub-phases
o Include specific strength and conditioning goals at each mesocycle
o Indicate the number of microcycles allocated to each mesocycle
o Indicate volume and intensity at each mesocycle
o Show each month within the periodization plan
o Please complete the periodization template below
2. Based on the information gathered from your macrocycle in Question 1, design a 3 week training
block that will be repeated, applying a weekly undulating or conjugate style periodisation structure to
achieve the planned goal. You must use the “periodization block template” provided on your

TASK #3 – 1000 words CONSULTATION & CLIENT PROFILE
Task Three has one (1) part. Consult the checklist before submitting your case study in order to ensure you have
completed all necessary information.
1. Consultation (1000 Words)
This part of the task requires students to find a client who has a sports, strength and conditioning goal, gain their
consent to participate and conduct screening and testing in order to deliver appropriate programming to the client.
Conduct a client indication and fitness appraisal using the documents you have prepared within your CIII in
Fitness for your client. If you do not have a copy of these you will have to create one for this task.
Ensure that you allow clients suitable opportunity and time to ask questions throughout all this process.
Your client induction and fitness appraisal must include the following;

c. APSS Pre-exercise questionnaire Stage 1 and 2

1.1. This task requires you to develop a strength and conditioning program for your client. To start you need
to use the results from your consultation and provide an explanation of the program you plan to develop.
Explain the following:
a. Techniques for strength and conditioning (including drills and other activities)
b. Appropriate core lifts and exercises to include in the session
c. Fitness components you plan to target in the session
d. Appropriate motivational techniques or strategies to incorporate
e. Strategies to reduce the risk of injury

g. Details on time frames required to achieve their goal
1.2. Based on the information gathered from your macrocycle in Question 1, design a 3 week training

TASK #5 – 500 words CONDUCTING SESSIONS
Task 5 has two (2) parts. You must complete both parts. Consult the checklist before submitting your case study
in order to ensure you have completed all necessary information.
1. Client sessions (Word limit not applicable)
Students are now required to implement the program they developed in the Task 4. Conduct a minimum of three
(3) sessions with your client of which one is to be in an outdoor open space. Each session must be a minimum of 60
minutes in duration.
In each session ensure that you:
a. Check the training area and equipment for safety
b. Demonstrate correct and safe use of equipment
c. Communicate the session objectives
d. Advise clients of appropriate behaviours/use in open space environments and address any unacceptable
behaviours.
e. Instruct and supervise the session
f. Monitor safety, intensity and technique
g. Provide appropriate motivation and instruction
h. Request feedback from your client in order to evaluate your own performance
i. Ask your client to keep a training diary
At the completion of your 3 sessions, retest your client’s fitness.

Obtain feedback from your client and perform a self-evaluation. Answer the following question once you have

Task 6 has three (3) parts. You must complete all 3 parts. Consult the checklist before submitting your case study
in order to ensure you have completed all necessary information.
Once you have completed your client sessions, it is time to review the program and make modifications where
necessary. It is also time to review your own performance for the purposes of professional development.
1. Recommendations
After reviewing your client sessions, retesting them and reviewing their training and nutrition diaries, explain the
recommendations you would make for your client in order to ensure they continue to work towards their goal.
