THIRD WEEK: VENEZUELA CASE STUDY – YOUR PROJECT will be due on or before July 3, at 5 pm CDT. This assignment has two components. The first part will be to discuss and analyze the current crisis in Venezuela. The second will be to develop an aid program or programs to help the Venezuelan people. In the first part you will assess the historical factors that you believe are contributing to the current crisis in Venezuela. Be sure to use chapter 8, “Venezuela: The Perils of Prosperity” in Modern Latin America as the basis for your discussion of the historical factors. For the second part of this assignment you are tasked with developing a program to remedy what you perceive to be the three most significant problems facing Venezuelans now, utilizing sources in our ReggieNet files. Discuss which issues/areas you would provide aid to and why you are prioritizing certain issues/areas over others. Please note: Similar to your other assignments in this course, there is no single correct answer to this assignment. You are asked to consider a complex situation, mindful of human rights concerns as well as political/economic/societal needs, obstacles, challenges. In the first part of your essay, you will be examining the historical factors that contribute to contemporary problems – keeping in mind that problems of poverty and inequality are deeply rooted in Venezuela – so too is governmental “binge” spending, and the severely distorted distribution of wealth, among other problems. Think about how the aid program you propose might affect other areas – no one problem exists on its own. Think about connections among issues and problems; this will help you demonstrate your understanding of contemporary Venezuela as you develop an insightful program.
