Thesis – While , What kinds of dilemmas confront the police in seeking to serve the interests of society? Is it possible to fight crime and make policing more humane at the same time? What policy changes can improve the chances of this? How has police brutality and lawbreaking been contested in Brazil? How does public opinion about the rule of law differ in the two countries? How is it evolving? , How does police brutality relate to people of higher income versus lower income? People, who live in slums or homeless? Description – Discuss police brutality in Los Angeles and Brazil related to the point of view of urban marginality and social class. Racialized police violence is a recurring issue. Recent social movements have re-centered police violence as a subject of public discourse, yet there has been little progress in reducing the number of people killed by police. Without further efforts in research and legal reform, this everyday crisis will continue. These interventions have the potential to disrupt current policing practices that continue to determine which lives are valued—physically and discursively. Also discuss what causes racism, and what circumstances lead people to act more racist especially in law enforcement. How do public officials reinforce racism, rather than try to counter it and how do certain policies alleviate racism? Tentative Sources – Find literature on the relationship between police violence and use of force, maybe sources that focus on the doctrinal relationship between U.S. Supreme Court Fourth Amendment jurisprudence and use of force policies. Use literature from class like Fortress by Mike Davis and The paradox of police violence in democratic Brazil. As well as other literature to demonstrate police violence in Brazil and the United States but especially in Los Angeles. Find the difference between them within laws and policies, similarities, and how law enforcement brutality relates to police use of Force by Ethnicity, Sex, and Socioeconomic Class. An example would be finding sources that possibly examine self-reported accounts of exposure to and perceptions of police use of force among Black and White ethnic groups by sex and income level. In terms of further focus, it would be possible to aim to go more in-depth for either the Brazilian or the US case. If you do both equally, just be aware that you should probably focus more on the common features of the problem. Should use 8 to 10 sources with in-text citations
