This week we are going to question how we interact with art.
Where do we see and interact with art? What is the social structure that we have set in this engagement? We are going to analyze what happens to a piece of art after it leaves the artist’s studio and enters the world. What is the purpose of art? What is considered art?
Part 1 of your assignment responds to some of these questions. I attached 4 pieces of art that we consider to be part of modern art. I also wanted you guys to move into a modern art mental space because next week we will be looking at modernism, so this is a very timely way to analyze how we see art.
Attached are some readings. Please read them and respond to the readings with your original thoughts.
Please make sure you are submitting one reading response that includes the 2 parts of your assignment.

Part 2: Art History/Context: What are Museums for?

One of the goals for the course is to think about the institutions or places where you encounter art. For this assignment, you will be thinking about the role of the art museum and researching specific ones. This is a two-part assignment. Make sure you complete the requirements for both parts

Part A- Watch this short video (about 4 minutes) that discusses the role of the art museum as it relates to the function of art. Then answer the question below. If you have minimal experience with art museums, you may choose to complete part 2 before part 1 so you get a better understanding of their collections, focus, and layouts.

What Art Museums Are For

1) The short answer (150-200 words): The narrator has a very specific opinion about the function of art and how museums could be better curated (selecting, grouping, and arranging works of art to be exhibited in a space). Based on this video or your experience going to visit work at an art museum, what is your opinion about the way that artworks should be displayed, or their exhibitions designed? Do you enjoy the chronological arrangement of galleries or would you prefer thematic exhibitions? Why? Another way to think about this question is: What type of art exhibition design appeals to you the most? What type of display would help you feel better connected to the work and its meaning?

Part B: This part of the assignment is designed to get you familiar with some of our well-known American museums. The goal here is to get these institutions on your radar and give you a general sense of where they are, and the focus of their collections. It is my firm belief that art is every human’s birthright, so let’s check out where our cultural riches reside!

1) Pick a total of 3 museums from this list––2 from the broader list of American ones and 1 from the list of those in Wisconsin.

2) Take 10-15 minutes of exploring their websites. Take note of their Exhibitions and/or Collections pages. Look for their Mission statements, sometimes listed under the About or Information links. A museum’s mission will describe the philosophy of the museum and the focus of its collection.

3) Submit a list of your three choices that includes the institution’s name, describes the mission of the museum, and identifies a recent, past, or upcoming exhibition the museum has shown that you would like to see, or have seen. Explain your inclinations to the works you have seen in these institutions and why?
