In his essay “A world of fields and fences,” William Cronon describes how New England colonists used fences to bound their property. He argues that these fences highlighted differences between Native American and colonists’ ideas about and practices of land use and resource management: “fences marked off…not only the map of a settlement’s property rights, but also its economic activities and ecological relationships as well.” Discuss how the colonists’ fences highlight differences in conceptions of property between Native Americans and colonists. Provide at least one example of how the fences also distinguished the two groups’ uses of the land. Try to include a very short introduction, with thesis, and conclusion of a sentence or two. Be sure to base your argument in course materials, such as the “A world of fields and fences” reading, and the lecture slides that I will attach titled Settler landscapes in New England. The essay should be less than 400 words but try to make it at least 350 words or more.
