Women in combat Assignment | Essay Help Services

Spend one hour providing a rough draft or sketch of an evaluation of the following argument. Argument: Look, it certainly is clear to me, and even a fool can plainly see that women should not be allowed to go into combat. First, most women are physically weaker than most men. Hence, physically superior male forces will easily overcome them. Also, since great many women are partly incapacitated by premenstrual symptoms, there will be frequent times when they will not be able to function effectively under combat conditions. Finally, most soldiers will do foolish and reckless things to protect women in combat since they are of the characteristic military mentality that honors and protects women in danger. Now, if you put these three factors together, then you can only come to the same conclusion I have. Look, it certainly is clear to me, and even a fool can plainly see that 1[women should not be allowed to go into combat.] First, 2[most women are physically weaker than most men.] Hence, 3[physically superior male forces will easily overcome them.] Also, since 4[great many women are partly incapacitated by premenstrual symptoms,] 5[there will be frequent times when they will not be able to function effectively under combat conditions.] Finally, 6[most soldiers will do foolish and reckless things to protect women in combat] since 7[they are of the characteristic military mentality that honors and protects women in danger.] Now, 8[if you put these three factors together, then you can only come to the same conclusion I have.] Index of Claims: Women should not be allowed to go into combat. CRITICAL ESSAY CHECK LIST (WHAT WE LOOK FOR)
THE INTRODUCTION SHOULD CONTAIN:
1. A logically clear statement of the argument you will criticize
2. A statement of your aims and description of the contents of your essay
3. Background material to help your reader understand the issue
THE BODY OF THE ESSAY
You need to expand your evaluation sketch into an essay evaluating each step of
the argument. You will be assessing each claim in each step as true, false or
questionable. In doing this, you must DEFEND YOUR CLAIMS AND GUIDE THE
READER THROUGH EACH STEP. This requires that you do the following:
A. Make the structure of the step clear to your reader. (BP’s, IA’s, SC or MC)1
B. State your RFD’s or RFB’s2 for each of the claims in the step. Remember, if a
claim needs clarification, make sure to describe how you are interpreting it.
C. Clarify and support your critical remarks where needed. Indicate what
clarification or information you need from the arguer for you to accept a claim
you have found questionable.
D. Independently assess the conclusion of that step by providing your
RFD’s or RFB’s or arguments for/against the conclusion.
E. Provide a brief assessment of the success or failure of that step
THE SUMMARY
1. Summarize what you have said about the argument. Make sure to include your
most important points and what you think you have shown.
2. Provide an overall assessment of the argument.
3. In your overall assessment, include suggestions for improvement, if any.
Explain why, if necessary, you think the argument cannot be improved and why it
should be abandoned.
THE DISCUSSION OF THE MAIN CONCLUSION
1. Discuss the MC independently of the argument: Is it true? False? Questionable?
Why?
2. Provide other arguments for or against the MC or what others have said on the
subject and your views on that.
3. Provide your views on the issue under discussion.
1 BP = Basic Premise IA = Inferential Assumption SC = Subconclusion MC = Main Conclusion
2 RFD = Reasons for Disbelief RFB = Reasons for Belief
