Assertions of fact must be documented unless they truly are common knowledge. Major counterarguments must be addressed. The conclusion must follow from the train of thought developed in the essay. Paragraph 1 — State your thesis and what conceptual areas you will explore to support your thesis. Next few paragraphs — Present the reasons for your position logically and clearly for each conceptual area that you examine. Acknowledge the major counterarguments and dispose of them. The content and order of your paragraphs should reflect the logical necessity or weight of your conclusions. If you have thought out your position and presented it clearly and credibly, even those who disagree vehemently should feel the need to sit back and reflect on the topic to review how they reached their own conclusions.
Last paragraph — Sum up the argument to demonstrate the validity of your position. The conclusion must follow logically from the content of the paper. If you care a lot about the topic, remember that emotion sometimes leads to irrationality. If you are to persuade those who disagree, you need to remain rational in your presentation.
