Case Name: United States VS Widnsor
Case Summary: Edith Windsor and Clara Spyer were married in the state of New York. When Spyer died in 2009, she left Windsor to be her sole executor of the estate. Everything was left to Windsor, but because gay marriage was not recognized by federal law, the government attempted to tax Windsor $363,000. Windsor filed a suit, and in the end declared the Defense of Marriage Act was unconstitutional.
