I have “completed” this to the best I can… I needed 5 sources for the poem and 3 for the movie each source needs to be annotated. I have attached the instructions and what I have completed of the annotated Bibliography.
“WarPhotograph.” A Journey Through Ekphrasis, ekphrasisanalysis.weebly.com/warphotograph.html.
In this article Audrey Armstrong analyzes and summarizes “War Photograph” a Poem written by Kate Daniels. She breaks down a few of the important lines and sections and explains the reasoning and meaning behind the words.
The part that stood out most to me is when Armstrong highlights how as Americans we just look at this photo and we feel extremely bad for the little girl and the other children and are appalled by what we are seeing. Although these feeling we experience maybe real and meaningful they are fleeting and only last for a moment. Quickly something else distracts us and we move on completely forgetting the people suffering 10,000 miles away. She then goes on to mention how the little girl is running towards hope whether its American soldiers or something that could help her wake up from nightmare that has now become her life.
“A Retrospective Essay by Kate Daniels.” Shining Rock Poetry Anthology, www.shiningrockpoetry.com/a-retrospective-essay-by-kate-daniels/.
In this article it discusses Kate Daniels life story essentially, it provided a lot of context and background into who she is as a person and a writer. It shows us the struggles she had growing up and how she found a safe place in poetry.
I learned that Kate Daniels did not have an easy life growing up; she grew up in a house where there was an atmosphere of economic stress, alcoholism, and emotional violence. At a young age she found comfort in writing and became very well versed in the skill of poetry. She often found herself when times got hard retreating to her room to write and that seemed the only place that provided relief. As she got older, she became more of a well-respected poet and even if times of distress in her maturing years she would find herself writing some of her best poetry in hard times. She always found herself going back to her room and isolating her shy introverted self from the world provided a sense of comfort.
“War Photographer and War Photograph.” Free Essays – PhDessay.com, 15 Apr. 2020, phdessay.com/war-photographer-and-war-photograph/.
This Article compares and contrasts two writing pieces. However, I was more focused on her thoughts on Kate Daniels “War Photograph”.
When I read this article, it reminded me a lot of the movie I analyzed “Apocalypse Now” and how the underlying tone of the film is the dehumanization of the characters in the film. This article shows how Kate Daniels portrayed the American people as losing their humanity when she uses what instead of who, we seem not human anymore. This is used to pull the reader in it cause the reader to think and contemplate if she is right. I took a number of things out if this article but this part stood out to me the most as she tries to emphasize how even people who did not physically experience the war became dulled to the brutality of what really happened over there. Again emphasizing the dehumanization to anyone involved directly or indirectly.
Apocalypse Now at 40: Why We Will Never See the Likes of Francis Ford Coppola’s War Epic Again, www.msn.com/en-gb/entertainment/movies/apocalypse-now-at-40-why-we-will-never-see-the-likes-of-francis-ford-coppola-e2-80-99s-war-epic-again/ar-AABJb08.
So, when I read this article it provided a background to “Apocalypse Now” that really dove into how the making of the film and production took a toll on the actors and everyone involved but specifically the director Coppola. It covered things like how it almost ruined his marriage and how it nearly drove him insane.
“Apocalypse Now” is a film that shows the utter destruction that the Vietnam War had on the Vietnam people and how it affected the American soldiers involved. However, a few things I took away from the reading of this article are the struggles that went into the making of this movie and how it nearly drove the director insane and almost destroyed his marriage. Many times, when we watch films, and we take it at face value rarely stopping to think about the effects it had on the real people involved in the making of the movie. For example, their filming was severely affected by a typhoon that wiped out their entire set, his lead actor Martin Sheen had a heart attack while filming, and just recreating of what was a brutal war that lead to over 3 million Vietnamese dead and nearly 60,000 Americans. As many soldiers who did survive the war and returned home to their families, but never really left the jungle. Coppola had the same experience through the making of this film it affected him for the rest of his life.
“Author Viet Thanh Nguyen on the Legacy of ‘Apocalypse Now,’ Forty Years Later: The Takeaway.” WNYC Studios, 15 Aug. 2019, www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/takeaway/segments/author-viet-thanh-nguyen-legacy-apocalypse-now-forty-years-later.
This is an article with an attached interview with a man named Viet Thanh Nguyen a Vietnamese refugee who came here during the War at a very young age. He discusses the effects that watching “Apocalypse Now” had on him many years later after watching it.
This article highlights the effect “Apocalypse Now” had on Viet Thanh Nguyen, now a man but someone who watched this film when he was a young boy. Nguyen, a refugee who fled Vietnam as a young boy because of the war. After watching the film, he didn’t realize how the violence and utter disregard the American soldiers had for the Vietnamese people had on him until he was older. For example, when the film shows the dropping of napalm bombs on villages and one scene where the sailors come up on a fishing boat and inadvertently slaughter them and he remembers being shocked by that and just putting away in his mind. He said he understood what Coppola was doing here trying to show the dehumanization of the sailors, but unfortunately it came at the expense of these people and it only shows them as victims. Although the movie is centered on these American sailors and the dehumanization they go through, it portrays how horribly the people of Vietnam were treated and murdered and seeing this at a young age was absolutely horrifying.
Film | March 1st, 2017 1 Comment. “What Is Apocalypse Now Really About? An Hour-Long Video Analysis of Francis Ford Coppola’s Vietnam Masterpiece.” Open Culture, www.openculture.com/2017/03/what-is-apocalypse-now-really-about-a-hour-long-video-analysis-of-coppolas-vietnam-masterpiece.html.
In this video analysis of “Apocalypse Now” they talk about the theme of the movie which is the process of dehumanization that these soldiers went through. I previously talked about this but more on how it affected the director, in this article it goes through what I believe caused the director to nearly lose his mind.
What I learned from this article was what lead the Coppola to almost go insane. He was so devoted to the making of this film that by having the characters go through this process of dehumanization the toll it had on him nearly cost him is life. As the movie goes on and they travel through the river they slowly become more and more dulled to their senses of what is right and wrong and lose their sense of morality. Things that he used that lead to this were in certain shots were real dead bodies, dead animals and just the remaking of these horrible things that happened to the Vietnamese people and the slaughtering that occurred. As this analysis goes through the movie some of the more gruesome scenes stood out more that when I watched it . After looking seeing it in this analysis I can see now what caused the actors and film crew to in a way have a similar experience as soldiers who really fought their. All who were involved in the making of this fil left a part of them in the Jungle.
