This paper is about a role play I did with a friend and had to write about my experience. I put the direction at the beginning of the paper.I just need for the paper to be edit. And to make sure the writing is clear.
After planning the script and videotaping the role-play scenario, how did it feel to walk in the shoes of a social worker? What insights did you gain from the experience? What aspects of this experience were challenging for you? Being able to recognize the areas where you were successful and the areas where you need improvement are what make role-plays an important part of your social work education.
For the written segment of your Final Project, reflect on your experience in developing this role-play video. Consider any insights you gained from the experience, as well as the challenges you might have experienced in its planning and execution. Think about the specific social work techniques you used and why you used them. Finally, review the videos your colleagues posted. Select one of those videos and consider any areas in which your colleague might improve their approach and why.
My experience in doing this role play was different because one of my close friends played a drug abuser client. Surprisingly I was a little nervous interviewing her because I never had to interview anyone before.Even though it was a close friend you never know how it will go on camera. During the interview while asking questions I found out about her childhood experience that I had no idea about. Some of her answers to my questions took me by surprise because I did not know she grew up in a drug environment.I found that her answers were coming from the heart and her life experience needed to be heard. This interview helped me build confidence and how to use different techniques I need to become a social worker in the future.
Lanisha Haygood grew up with a father who was addicted to heroin who refused to stop using until the day he passed away. Lanisha and her siblings grew up around drugs while their mother was working and they were in her father’s care. She expressed that some days it did not feel like a childhood and other days were good when her mom was around. For example, they would go outside to the park and play with friends verses when they were with their father they would go to drug houses and her dad would leave them at strangers house to go get high. She explains how she became addicted to heroin and how it affected her adult life. These insights would help me with background information about her childhood and lifestyle. This would help Lanisha get the proper treatment she needs to cope with her addiction, mental health, and life experiences.
Some of the challenges I came across while planning this role play was finding individuals that want to participate in the role playing. I had to ask three or four people who did not feel comfortable doing the role play because they said it makes them feel uncomfortable and nervous. But finally after finding a close friend who agreed to do the role play scenario came with other challenges as well. Another challenge was preparing my questions for the role play. I never interviewed a drug addict before and it was hard coming up with questions that were not too vague. Also, multitasking while doing the interview,I had to listen and write down the information she was telling me at the same time so I could come with a treatment plan to help her. It was challenging to know whether I should have listened more than doing more writing.
Some techniques I used were open and ended questions to help me get more information on Lanisha background information. Empathy because it’s important to be understanding, aware, not judging, and being sensitive to client’s situation.Another technique was setting a boundary I made sure the client understood that I was only their to make sure I was there to help her with recovery and I can only be reach at the office and through email. Demonstrating some of these techniques can help the client feel comfortable in sharing information and help with the proper treatment.
We both agree to select a drug abuse role play because of Lanisha’s background. This role was something that happened in real life and she felt that it needed to be heard.
I felt that my friend did a great job in telling her experience from her childhood. But she could also work on going into more detail when answering questions about her background. Some improvement she can make is giving more information when answering questions. Overall I believe she did a great job in telling her story.
