Project Proposal: Women’s Roles within Technology Companies
This project directly relates to session 8: “Women, gender and IT workforce/leadership.”
As we have seen throughout class, there is a large gender disparity between men and
women in the computing and engineering industries at all levels. For our project, we plan to
investigate these differences at the workforce level, specifically to see if there is a difference in
the type of jobs women hold as compared to their male counterparts. Using research from
organizations such as the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), https://research.swe.org/ , the
International Information System Security Certification Consortium’s (ISC2) annual women in
cybersecurity report ( https://www.isc2.org/ ), and the Big Five (GAFAM) tech companies’
internal reports ( https://www.statista.com/chart/4467/female-employees-at-tech-companies/ ) we
can begin to understand some of the disparities that exist in the type of roles men and women are
pursuing within the computing and engineering fields.
Our project aims to take an in-depth look at each of the fields we’re studying and more
specifically the types of jobs we are looking to pursue after graduation. We plan to investigate
and discuss each of these fields individually, before drawing conclusions about the computing
and engineering fields as a whole and why these gaps exist.
(For me, my major is Information Systems, and I’m looking to go into more of the management
side of the field after graduation. I’m not too sure as to what I want to do specifically, but I hope
to be able to look into the general gaps in this field overall.)
We chose this topic because it represents a lesser-known statistic about these fields.
When we discuss the gender gap, we typically only discuss company or field wide differences,
not individual job titles within those fields. This leaves out important information on the types of
jobs women are taking, which we feel like needs to be discussed and studied more.
Most of the questions we have at this time revolve around the minimal amount of
research we’ve conducted thus far. Although we have plenty of primary and secondary sources,
we still have to determine how each relate to each other. Some of the most pressing questions we
plan to answer include: What proportion of women are in leadership roles? What sorts of jobs are
women more likely to hold? Why are women selecting these jobs? ( This is an good opportunity to
address the function of gender regarding this topic. How do gender norms, stereotypes, etc
contribute to the trends you’re identifying?) Are there any additional conclusions that can be drawn
based on race?
