Basically the only instruction given was to compose an essay with an arguement and have it be 8-10 pages, not including the bibliography. The topic of the essay can be on anything you choose, but ideally it would be something respectable at a college level
Hello class,
I understand it is difficult to convey what the expectations for your final paper are
remotely. I have considered hosting a remote class through Skype or Webex or something
similar, but that just seems like it would be more of a hassle to you all. Maybe I’ll record myself
giving a brief lecture giving more detail about what you need for the final paper, and then have
you watch it whenever you have time.
In the meantime, don’t stress out about the final paper. My expectations come down to
two items:
1. You compose an essay with an argument. This means you are explaining why your topic
is the way it is, and why it is important, rather than just stating what it is. For example, if
your topic was the emergence of hip-hop, you might write “Hip-hop changed pop music
and culture because…” and “It is important that hip-hop changed music and culture
because…” rather than just “Hip-hop changed music and culture.” Do you get this? If
you want, email me with your topic and we can discuss how to make it an argument.
2. Your essay is about 8-10 pages long, not including the bibliography. I know this may be
the longest paper some of you have written. If you’re intimidated by the length, I
recommend breaking up the essay into smaller bits. One section could be detailing
background information, and another can explain your intervention into the conversation.
Shoot for getting these two requirements done. Don’t sweat this paper—I understand completing
schoolwork right now is a bit of a struggle. If I see that you are working hard, you won’t have to
worry about your grades at the end of the semester.
