Answer the following questions. You can even type on this form and save it as Term Paper Proposal Worksheet (with your last name on it)

What is your proposed topic? (Lay out your proposed title)

I decided I would like to talk about the theme displayed in the story “The Runaway Slave at Pilgrim’s Point.” I am not quite yet what I would like my title to be.

Why are you interested? (Just a couple of sentences will do)

I am interested in discussing the theme for this poem because in a way I can relate to it. I am a young African American girl whose ancestors had to go through this. I believe the theme is a mother going to any length to protect her child. I see a lot of her in my mom sometimes.

What do you already know? (be sure to mention earlier papers & readings in a general way) – Again, a few sentences or so is all you need

In the poem the mother becomes pregnant and ends up killing her own child to protect her from the world. She also murdered her child because the baby was the result of her being raped. In addition, I did some research about women who were slaves and pregnant and found out it was actually really common for pregnant slaves to murder their children after they are born.

What questions do you have now, to which you do not know the answers?

  1. Is Pilgrim’s point a real thing?

  1. The person she was raped by, were they white?

3.

5.

6.

7.

8.

What is your research plan? Be as specific as possible. Practice citing the sources you have found that you think will be useful. (Use the 2016 MLA Update handout and the various Citing 101 handouts.) I think I want to lay out my paper by introducing the story first and stating what the themes are. I will then make the first few paragraphs discussing and going into depth about the themes. Then I will add in how I personal relate to the story, and finish off with how I felt about the story and my thoughts on how it was written.

It helps here to cite the work(s) you’ll be writing about, and maybe a secondary source you’ve already looked at, saying (for the secondary source, if you use one) why you found it useful. Secondary sources are not required for this ENGL 261 Term Paper, but they can be helpful.
