Week 1: Discussion Question – What is Evidence-Based Practice? Pamella Simpson posted 2020 9:09 PM Subscribe Previous Next This page automatically marks posts as read as you scroll. Adjust automatic marking as read setting According to The American Journal of Nursing 2010, “evidence -based practice (EBP) is a problem -solving approach to the delivery of health care that integrates the best evidence from studies and patient care data with clinician expertise and patient outcomes can be achieve. When delivered in a context of caring and in a supportive organizational culture, the highest quality of care and best patient outcomes can be achieved”. One of the biggest challenges that healthcare providers are going through around the world is provide quality care, cost-effective with evidence based practice. This is challenging the whole world, especially on the 21 century where everything needs to be done quick because we do not have time, however we want immediate results. Evidence based practice it is important as it, can reduce costs significantly and improve patient outcomes. Not all the care delivered is based in evidence, since takes around 20 years to get evidence into practice; which means that not everybody will get the evidence based recommended course of treatment. That can impact directly patients and, the healthcare system at the same time, in different ways. A patient that is not treated according to evidence based recommendation, may not get better, may have complications and may die after a long or short period of treatment. The healthcare system can be severely affected by that because, too much could be spent without necessity, a law suit can be generated and for the healthcare institutions that depend on the reimbursement would be negatively impacted. Even though the results of evidence based practice is extremely positive, a lot of nurses still afraid of developing their own research because of the lack of computer skills and a lack of knowledge about EBP. A clinical question that piques my interest is the percentage of nurse practitioner using EBP on their daily practice? what could improve their adherence to it? what is missing to improve the use of it? “Implement changes into your practice based on resources and families resources and preferences, but also make sure you are evaluating the outcomes of those changes on your practice. if is not measurable , then we are not getting anywhere”.
