Instructions:

Using the chart below, trace the development of Shakespeare’s King Henry V in his monologues and soliloquy. Consider how these speeches act as a guide to his personal growth and understanding. Approach the chart below in the following way:

  1. Determine where King Henry speaks; indicate the act, scene and line #s of the speech
  2. Record words or phrases from the speech that you feel best illustrate the king’s internal struggles, realizations, growth or concerns.
  3. Evaluate the speech overall; what is your overall impression of the king at this point in the play?

After you are finished reading the play, compose a paragraph about King Henry’s development using your evaluation of each speech. In this paragraph you should consider what realizations he has regarding his responsibilities as king, his duty to God, his relationship with his soldiers and with his Queen, Katherine.

You will turn in the chart and this evaluation on 4/30. You will need to recreate the chart in a word document for turn in.

Style Guide:

  • Approximately 1 page in length, Double-space, 12-point type, 1” margins
  • A Works Cited page with a citation for the play is required.
  • MLA guidelines require in-text parenthetical citations for each quote or paraphrase or any information not your own idea. All parenthetical citations go at the end of your sentence and should include the author’s surname and a page number. For plays, your parenthetical citations should include the act, scene, and line numbers of the quote: EX. (4.3.27-9).
  • Follow MLA guidelines for headings, page numbering, citations, and Works Cited
  • You should support your response with quotes from the play
  • You should have clear, concise sentences, proper grammatical form, appropriate verb tense [in analysis, you should use present verb tense when discussing events in the play, and correct spelling.
  • DO NOT use 2nd person pronouns.
  • Make sure your nouns & pronouns agree!
  • No contractions in academic writing
  • Own your argument! Avoid vague phrases like “I think,” “I feel,” “I believe,” “for me.”  Also, avoid vague words such as “perhaps,” “maybe,” “could,” “possibly,” etc.
  • Posusta’s pet peeves – avoid using/misusing the following at all costs!
  • mindset, amongst (“among” is preferable), hold (when you mean “have”), oftentimes (should be “often”), societal (instead use “social”), utilize (instead use “use”), due to the fact that (“because” is preferable).
