The Class that Gave Me the Challenge to Learn
Writing teachers follow a curriculum of what they must teach their students every year.
Most do not stray from the curriculum on account of teaching what they are required to and
never going above and beyond. Yet some stray from their required curriculum to enhance their
students’ learning experience. Through the years of my reading and writing experiences, the
teachers I acquired never went beyond the curriculum. Often my teachers expressed their
unearthly passion for reading and writing, but I never connected with the material on the same
level that they did. I struggled in my writing classes and learned only what was projected onto
me by my overly excited teachers. Overall, I was a student with mostly A’s and never had any
trouble major in a class, except English. I wanted to become a better reader and writer than I
was. Especially before college, but it was also something that I always wanted to be good at.
Even in middle school, I had a journal full of novel ideas that I thought were the next Percey
Jackson series.
I decided to enroll myself in the AP English class for my senior year of high school. Not
knowing it then, my AP English teacher would change my view and comprehension of writing
and literature. Before my first day of my senior year, I had known little about the AP English
teacher called Mr. Maxwell. I had heard horror stories from whom I had known as smart
students, saying he failed them on a paper or that he did not prepare them enough for the AP

exams in the Spring. I was worried about taking the class, and then I discovered that I possibly
obtained the worst teacher to learn writing and reading from. I was truly at a loss. I wanted to
take this class, but I was afraid that I would not be able to understand this teacher. The thought of
going to the first day of his class taunted me. I did not want to back out of this class though, and I
had friends in the course to motivate me as well.
The first day of my senior year came too fast, and I found myself excited and nervous.
AP English was my first class. I remember walking into the classroom and being slightly
confused. There were murals on the ceiling, at least five bookshelves full of different books,
artwork and pictures scattered the walls, and Mr. Maxwell was bald and had tattoos. School days
were soon flying by. Before I knew it, I was growing increasingly amazed by Mr. Maxwell and
had a newfound interest in reading and writing that I had not before. Not only was his teaching
style different from what I had known, but he was able to make me understand reading and
writing on his level. Though I found him to be quite fascinating, there were qualities of him that
were annoying, to say the least. He was frighteningly genius-like in his presentation and speech,
he often referred to books that none had heard of before, and noted his hatred for Disney movies
on several occasions.
I did struggle in his class, but most students did. I was worried about my grades, but I
also discovered a new enjoyment for novels, plays, and writing by furthering my analysis in
books and finding a new format to write in. I found my favorite book in Mr. Maxwell’s class;
Heart of Darkness, by Joseph Conrad. We read and discussed in class, but when Mr. Maxwell
directed the discussion or pointed out any symbols, similes, metaphors, etc. that benefited the
work as a whole, I found my new enjoyment for reading. In Heart of Darkness, I loved how there
Ormsby 3
were so many different layers or ways to interpret parts in the novel. As Marlow traveled through
the Congo to find its center and Kurtz, are the stops along the way representative of Dante’s
levels of hell in Inferno? Or are they representative of the man’s Id, Ego, and Superego as
psychologist Sigmund Freud believed every man had? The layers of this novel were immense
and I always enjoy rereading it with a different perspective. Though my method of reading has
improved, my writing still needs improvement to this day. I learned different techniques of
writing with Mr. Maxwell, but it is safe to say that I still need improvement as a writer. As one
can most likely gather, I did not pass both of the AP English exams, but my main goal was to
become a better reader and writer and I achieved that in Mr. Maxwell’s class.
I was able to connect and understand the material in Mr. Maxwell’s class, unlike any
other teacher that I had previously had. This newfound connection that I did not think I had to
literature and writing was an extraordinary accomplishment for me. I was able to find new
methods that help me analyze different readings and to better comprehend the hidden meaning in
pieces of work. Before, my old teachers had told me exactly what I needed to know, but the
methods they used to help me understand the material did not connect me like Mr. Maxwell’s
methods had. I am happy that I was able to become a better reader and writer. I am happy that I
had this breakthrough before college started too. Now, I feel more prepared for what future
professors will give me.

WRIT 101

Assignment #1—Literacy Narrative

The first writing assignment will be a personal essay of 3 – 4 pages on the topic of your reading and/or writing background. I include “or” because you may wish to focus on a portion of your background so specific that it excludes one or the other. That’s fine. The emphasis of this assignment is on the personal essay form more than the literary subject. You might rather write in depth about something small than try to fit your entire history into such a short assignment.

As you write, think about how you want to present yourself as a character and what will be the most effective techniques for such a presentation. The more you can make it about your unique self—this is part of the magic of a good personal essay—the more it will capture and hold the attention of your readers.

I am offering the extended deadline for revisions because I want to emphasize the role revision plays in writing. Writing is a process. You work at it and work at it. It takes time. Sometimes the school calendar isn’t conducive to the writing process, but as much as possible I’d like it to be.

If the grade of a revision is higher than the previous grade it will replace it. If it’s lower for some reason, I’ll leave the first grade. That should encourage you take real risks during revision.
