GUIDELINES FINAL ESSAY For this essay, you will be asked to write a 2500/3000 words essay on one of the main topics of our class: populism, clientelism, democratic decline, political parties, etc. You will contextualize the topic in at least two countries of your choice. For example: if you choose to examine how some political parties have promoted (or not) democracy, you can compare PSUV from Venezuela and PRI in Mexico. Or if you choose populism, you can compare Bachelet in Chile to Correa in Ecuador. And so on and so forth. Be sure to briefly define concepts that you will be using. Please do each of the following things: 1. State your argument clearly (this should happen in the introduction); 2. Include accurate evidence that supports your account of each party’s role in promoting (or not) democracy; and 3. Include evidence from at least four outside sources. I am happy to react to your ideas before you write your paper. Send me a couple of lines and I will send back my feedback ASAP. Specificities: The paper should have no more than 3000 words in length, not counting the bibliography (which must be listed in alphabetical order at the end of the manuscript). You’ll drop an electronic copy on a special folder in Assignments section enabled on the course’s website. DUE DATE: 4/6 23:59 (MST). I will deduct 10 points for each day of late submission. The paper should include the following sections: Title, Name, Date Introduction: Good introductions are important, because they set the tone for the paper, either by framing the question to be addressed, the puzzle to be explored, and/or the significance of the topic. When I finish reading the introduction I should have a good sense of the content of the rest of the outline. (Note: the operative word to keep in mind when writing any paper is EMPATHY. That means, basically, putting yourself in the other person’s shoes. Picture what it’s like to be a person reading your paper and ask yourself, am I being as clear and helpful to the reader as possible?) Body of the paper: This part of the paper should be dedicated to making the case for the argument you have laid out in the introduction. The body will be organized into the main points that lend support to your thesis statement. Please include supporting data for that point and include those references that you use as evidence. Conclusion: this part summarizes briefly and gives you the opportunity to make a concluding statement or assessment. Important: don’t add new material or findings to the conclusion. The conclusion is not the place to start writing a new paper or to extend the old one. It is a place to ‘conclude’ and reflect upon the pages that have preceded it. Bibliography: All papers must include a bibliography at the end of the paper. This is where the reader will see just how extensive your sources are and what sources you used. Please include all readings that you used to make your points. You may include any readings that we have read in class thus far. You must also use at least two additional (outside) sources that you will find on your own. In all, you must cite a minimum of five sources. Citations: Please use any font style or citation format, just be consistent.
