In your essay, analyze how one text made you feel. How many texts will you write about? ONE. If a text made you “feel” a certain way, the author or authors used rhetorical tricks to get you to feel this way. Forget about the “facts” as they are reported, say, in Gansberg’s article. Sure, Gansberg’s article makes you feel angry because it describes how witnesses to a cruel crime did nothing to aid the victim. The “facts” reported may indeed make you feel mad, but you need to go beyond a consideration of the “facts” and instead analyze the article to show how Gansberg uses rhetorical tricks (loaded words, strategic organization of the text, etc.) to sharpen and strengthen this angry feeling. Summarize the entire work very briefly in your opening paragraph, and then turn quickly to an in-depth and novel analysis of one of these two texts. Question the text, challenge it, expand upon it. Writing a paper is about making choices. Gansberg makes choices, and so do Milgram and Hollander. Look for “loaded words,” as Donald Hall advises. Develop and support a unified argument. Support your thesis with specific textual evidence that you analyze closely.
