\\Here is an example of how your final should be structured. (Also, note the quality of the research
question). This is from a different course but the issue here is the structure. Pay attention to how this
example does not limit itself to just one quote from the text, it has a T#1 and T#2. In the following
questions, the reference to the text will follow this sequence T#3, T#4, etc .
● What are some of the ways in which the negative connotations of black people have been
propagated in order to create social acceptance of black imprisonment?
When institutions propagate themselves on certain concepts, notions, and ideas, they remain
embedded in the very infrastructure of said institution, forever serving as mechanisms in the way
they function. These elements become that which drives the system, so much so that it will fail
without its presence. And so, due to ideas and ways of thought being brought about through
human effort, humans are also to be held accountable for the fashioning of such designs. What
then becomes imminent in the consciousness that delves within the process of creating these
institutions. In other words, it is important that one is analytical of the rationalization behind
these institutions and the way they function. Taking heed, “what is important about the new
racism is its claim of logic and rationality of thought and judgement” (Jones, 371; IC#1 ). If we
regress back to the past it is easy to find the origins of the current day logic behind the mass
incarceration of African Americans. What reigned true in the justification of slavery was that
“the rules of Christian conduct did not include these heathens. Inferior in intelligence but
superior in brawn, black slaves could be disciplined harshly” (Azevedo, 2005, 92; T#1 ). And so,
the reasoning behind forced labor would continue to reap what it was meant to sow for centuries
on.
Gradual emancipation had been a proposed option for enslaved African Americans. Contrary to
what would surpass, there was a demand for an expansion of freedom as well as labor reform and
many African Americans took action by constructing their own communities, exercising their
right to vote, and formulating plans for educational systems and land ownership. All of this
would be deconstructed by racialized violence. The “racism and criminalization after
emancipation” (Gilmore, 2000; SR#1 ) are connected to the state-sponsored persecution of black
people.
Reconstruction did not reconstruct in any sense due to repressive forms of institutionalized
violence by the state and white supremist. But, if we are to understand the rationalization behind
institutions, mass imprisonment must be viewed as a coercive method for mediating the loss of
free labor. And so, the concept of blame must be factored into the discussion of social acceptance
of black imprisonment during Reconstruction and onward. According to Africana Studies,
“Reconstruction was a failure because blacks, northern white ‘carpetbaggers,’ and southern
white ‘treasoners’ nearly ruined the moral, financial, and political order that shaped the South”
(Azevedo, 2005, 127; T#2 ). This serves as justification for subsequent imprisonment because
white society wishes to rid itself of the deviants who uprooted their way of life while also
wishing to put them back to their intended use. The compliant slave became the disobedient
criminal who wished nothing more than to taken that which they did not deserve because they
were too lazy to acquire it the proper way.
