I have certain quotes from the book and I already have the other sources…I just can’t type it outUse these quotes and analysis from the book:
“My wife can’t do this. My wife can’t do that. No wife of
mines…He go on and on. Shug Avery finally say, Good thing I
ain’t your damn wife. He hush then,” (Walker 71).
This is showing how Shug has a little bit of control over Mr.__.
Also how Shug responds with such power that normally women from
that time wouldn’t even think of using. The women have the
power but Shug is the only one using it .
“He beat me today cause he say I winked at a boy in church. I
may have got somethin in my eye but I didn’t wink. I don’t even
look at mens. That’s the truth. I look at women, tho, cause
I’m not scared of them,”(Walker 5).
Men are so intimidating to Celie that she doesn’t even look at
them. They frighten her so much. Women, on the other hand, are
gentle and now scary to her.
“He start to choke me, saying You better shut up and git used to
it. But I don’t ever git used to it,”(Walker 1).
Albert abuses Celie by choking her and saying she better get
used to it… meaning that it will be something that happens
often. She takes the abuse because she feels as though she
can’t fight back.
“It feel like heaven is what it feel like, not like sleeping
with Mr._ at all. Waker up Sugar, I say. They back. And Shug
roll over, hug me, and git out of bed,”(Walker 113).
Celie compares sleeping with Albert to sleeping with Shug; says
it’s two different feelings. Shug cares a lot about Celie, and
would never hurt her… unlike Albert.
“Celie, she say, Nettie not the only one you got to worry bout.
Say what, I ast. Me, Celie, think about me a little bit. Miss
Celie, if you kill Albert, Grady be all I got left. I can’t
even stand the thought of that,”(Walker 144).
Shug would miss Celie if she went to jail or left her. She
can’t stand the thought of not having her by her side. Shows
how close their bond has become.
“Nobody ever love me, I say. She say, I love you, Miss Celie.
And then she haul off and kiss me on the mouth. Um, she say,
like she surprise. I kiss her back, say, um, too. Us kiss and
kiss till us can’t hardly kiss no more,”(Walker 111-112).
The bond Celie and Shug have created makes them inseparable.
Shug loves Celie. Shug acts how a man should act towards a
woman. Being gentle. Shows love. Tells her she loves her.
“If you was my wife, she say, I’d cover you up with kisses
instead of licks, and work hard for you too. He ain’t beat me
much since you made him quit, I say. Just a slap now and then
when he ain’t got nothing else to do,”(Walker 108).
Shows, yet again, that Shug treats Celie how she’s supposed to
be treated (or would). Albert just hits Celie for no reason.
Showing he knows how much power he has over her, just because
he’s a masculine man.
“Shug come over and she and Sofia hug. Shug say, Girl, you look
like a good time, you do. That when I notice how Shug talk and
act sometimes like a man. Men say stuff like that to
women,”(Walker 80).
Celie finally starts to realize that Shug acts like a man
sometimes. Just the way she talks and acts. Celie likes it
though because she isn’t a man that would hurt her.
“He beat me when you not here, I say. Who do, she say, Albert?
Mr._ I say. I can’t believe it, she say. She sit down on the
bench next to me real hard, like she drop. What he beat you
for? She ast. For being me and not you,”(Walker 74).
Shug doesn’t and hasn’t gotten beat before so she’s confused as
to why Celie is getting beat. Especially by Albert. She’s
genuinely shocked, so shocked that she puts a stop to it. Celie
is also starting to realize that Shug is more privileged and
powerful than her.
“Well, she say, looking me up and down, let’s make you some
pants. What I need pants for? I say. I ain’t no man. Don’t
get uppity, she say. But you don’t have a dress do nothing for
you. You not made like no dress pattern, neither…”(Walker 145).
Celie believes that she doesn’t need pants because only men wear
them but Shug basically says that it shouldn’t be something only
men wear. Shug wears things that make her look good while Celie
doesn’t care about looks.
