1. Thought/Research Paper

During class this semester, we have discussed current topics weekly. As a result, our class has become more aware of various topics related to Criminal Justice from a national and global prospective.

III. Writing Assignment

Each student will be required to select a topic related to Criminal Justice. The topic must be directly related to a current issue in criminal justice.

At midterms, each student is to select a topic they would like to research and write a 3 page (double Spaced) research/thought paper. The 3 pages does not include the cover page or your reference page. All papers MUST include a reference page.  Please see sample topics below. Students aren’t required to use below topics.

Professor Knox will review the midterm draft paper and return it with corrections and comments. A final version of the paper (6 pages) will be turned in and calculated in the student’s final grade.

Each student must obtain prior permission for the topic before starting to work on the paper. Topics that haven’t received permission from the instructor will not be accepted and may result in an “F” grade being issued.

The paper should consist of factual and cited information. A paper can have a controversial issue example “Should Illegal Immigrants automatically be departed for breaking minor laws?” Some may have an opinion for or against this topic. It is ok to indicate what your opinion is; however, you have to support any opinion with factual information.

The papers must be submitted via blackboard. The midterm paper will be due midnight TBD.

Unacceptable Topics:

• Gun Control
• Death Penalty

Sample Topics:

• Should the judicial system be reevaluated or changed because of racially unfair sentences?
• What changes should be implemented to prevent male-male prison rape?
• Private prisons, history and challenges in US criminal justice system?
• History and Separation of Juvenile Courts and Adult Courts in the US
• Are state-mandated “three-strikes” policies unfair?
• Minimal age of the separation of Juveniles Delinquents vs. Adult Criminals
• Are exile programs (where a criminal is sent to prison in a distant state) fair?
• Effects of Legalization of Marijuana on the US Criminal Justice System?
• Illegal Immigrants in the US Criminal Justice System
