In this assignment, you are required to produce a technical paper entitled “A Comparative Evaluation of Mobile Ad Hoc Networks Routing Protocols” intended for an IEEE International conference whereby the audience are expected to have some basic networking background.

In contrast to wired fixed networks, routing in a mobile ad hoc network (MANET) has additional challenges. For instance, in MANET, network nodes are mobile and the wireless connections between nodes may deteriorate over time. To address these specific challenges, new routing protocols were proposed in the literature. In this paper, you must first identify and explain the routing issues related to MANET that motivated these ad hoc routing protocols. Diagrams may be used to help illustrate the issues.

Conventionally, these protocols can be categorised into two approaches, namely proactive and reactive. You must compare and contrast the two main routing approaches (proactive vs reactive). You should base your report on the research literature and then critically assess the two approaches.

Your assessment must be supported with your own quantitative evaluation. For this, choose one sample protocol from each approach and evaluate their performance under different operating conditions. Your evaluation can be based on known simulators such as ns-3. Make sure you provide details of your simulation setup and experiments and elaborate how you design the experiments and interpretations of the obtained results.

The paper must be properly organised and structured with sections and/or subsections to maximise clarity. The text should be concise. All material cited must be properly referenced.

Submission Format

An IEEE-compliant conference paper. The paper must be formatted according to the IEEE two-column format which must include an abstract and references as well as your simulation script as appendix. Reference style should follow BU Harvard format. You can download the IEEE template from the following link:

https://www.ieee.org/conferences_events/conferences/publishing/templates.html

In addition to adhering to the template, the paper should not exceed 3000 words, excluding abstract, references, diagrams, result plots and appendices. You are encouraged to use diagrams to support your paper.

Marking Criteria

The following criteria will be used to assess the assignment:

Precision and clarity of the paper including references                                                                10%

Description of the routing challenges in MANET                                                                          20%

  • To pass: Students should at least identify different challenges
  • To achieve higher mark: Students should also elaborate on the challenges as well as detail the impacts of these challenges

Qualitative comparison of proactive and reactive MANET routing protocols                                 20%

  • To pass: Students should be able to identify and briefly elaborate different key design choices of the two approaches
  • To achieve higher mark: Students should also discuss the implications and trade-off of these design choices

Quantitative evaluation, interpretations of results and quality of conclusions                                40%

  • To pass: Students should design reasonable simulation experiment(s) with at least a runnable simulation script/setup with some basic results
  • To achieve higher mark: Students should have designed and implemented proper set of simulations to assess performance of selected MANET routing protocols under different conditions with appropriate corresponding interpretations of results

Quality of conclusions                                                                                                               10%

  • To pass: Students should at least conclude their findings based on their evaluation
  • To achieve higher mark: Students should also be able to find insights and implications based on their evaluation results

Total                                                                                                                                        100%

HELP AND SUPPORT

  • If a piece of coursework is not submitted by the required deadline, the following will apply:
  1. If coursework is submitted within 72 hours after the deadline, the maximum mark that can be awarded is 50%. If the assessment achieves a pass mark and subject to the overall performance of the unit and the student’s profile for the level, it will be accepted by the Assessment Board as the reassessment piece. The unit will count towards the reassessment allowance for the level; This ruling will apply to written coursework and artefacts only; This ruling will apply to the first attempt only (including any subsequent attempt taken as a first attempt due to exceptional circumstances).
  2. If a first attempt coursework is submitted more than 72 hours after the deadline, a mark of zero (0%) will be awarded.
  3. Failure to submit/complete any other types of coursework (which includes resubmission coursework without exceptional circumstances) by the required deadline will result in a mark of zero (0%) being awarded.

The Standard Assessment Regulations can be found on Brightspace.

  • If you have any valid exceptional circumstances which mean that you cannot meet an assignment submission deadline and you wish to request an extension, you will need to complete and submit the Exceptional Circumstances Form for consideration to your Programme Support Officer (based in C114) together with appropriate supporting evidence (e.g, GP note) normally before the coursework deadline. Further details on the procedure and the exceptional circumstances form can be found on Brightspace. Please make sure that you read these documents carefully before submitting anything for consideration. For further guidance on exceptional circumstances please see your Programme Leader.
  • You must acknowledge your source every time you refer to others’ work, using the BU Harvard Referencing system (Author Date Method). Failure to do so amounts to plagiarism which is against University regulations. Please refer to http://libguides.bournemouth.ac.uk/bu-referencing-harvard-style for the University’s guide to citation in the Harvard style. Also be aware of Self-plagiarism, this primarily occurs when a student submits a piece of work to fulfill the assessment requirement for a particular unit and all or part of the content has been previously submitted by that student for formal assessment on the same/a different unit.
