Watch the short film “The 16th Man” (2010; directed by Clifford Bestall) Against the odds, South Africa won the Rugby World Cup in 1995. The 50-year old political policy of Apartheid had been overthrown the year before and Nelson Mandela (the imprisoned advocate of equality for all South Africans regardless of skin color) had been released. Mandela’s government, with Mandela at the forefront had began rebuilding a nation badly in need of racial unity, especially the ramifications of years of political and economic sanctions imposed by international administrations and governments in opposition of Apartheid. The impact of South Africa’s return to international rugby, and the presence of the tournament in South Africa made the 1995 Rugby World Cup a turning point in this rebuilding process. After watching this film, please write a reflection (2 pages, 1.5 spacing, 12 point font, Times New Roman) which includes responses to the following questions as well as your own thoughts (written as a continuous piece, not question/answer). 1. How was Rugby viewed in S. Africa before the World Cup? 2. “One team, one country”- How was this evident during the World Cup? 3. How was the 1995 Rugby World Cup used to foster the ideals underlying international sports?
