Psychology in Media Paper
.
Psychology in Media Paper: Your assignment for this paper (5 pages of content in APA
Format) is to find one psychological construct that is prominently displayed and/or used in
some popular medium, describe the construct, and describe the use of the construct in the
identified medium.
Specifically, you must do the following in your paper:
1. Identify and define the psychological construct you have chosen to use. For example, if you
use sequential development, explain what it is and how it fits into some particular
psychological model.
2. Identify the medium that the construct is evident in and give a brief summary of the story
and/or plot of the medium. The medium may be a book, a short story, a stage play, a movie,
or even a TV show. If you use and cite a TV show, use a specific episode; do not simply
generalize about an entire TV series.
3. Explain in detail how the construct is used in the story, play, show, etc. Pay attention in your
paper to how the psychological construct relates to or reflects a real-life setting or situation.
1. Give some specific anecdotal or empirical evidence of the psychological
construct in your identified medium. For example, if you were writing on
“Sequential Development in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” you would need
to provide examples of how Harry, Hermione, or Ron behaved at the beginning of
a term, and how he or she behaved at the end of that term and support your
assertion that behavior change could be attributed to sequential development.
2. Use and cite at least two pieces of research which describe the psychological
construct you have found in the media. Your research should tie together and
support what you observed in the media to the construct. For example, you could
cite a key characteristic of sequential development that you discovered in a journal
article, and then point out where that characteristic was observed in Harry Potter
and the Goblet of Fire.
3. Conclude your paper by identifying what you believe are the good or bad aspects
or results of the construct you observe. You must identify at least two aspects or
potential results and explain why you think they are good or bad. Some examples:
§ Change (increase or decrease) in learning potential for some group
§ Change (increase or decrease) in bias or discrimination against some
group
§ Change (increase or decrease) in aggression or violence in society
§ Development of a new treatment for some social phobia
§ Design of a more efficient, more human-friendly office
§ Change (increase or decrease) in personal self-esteem
§ Provide support for those who are in terminally ill situations
After your paper is concluded, write a one paragraph reflection statement about this course.
Evaluate how knowledge, skills, and attitudes learned in this course apply to your chosen
career. How do you think developing your observational skills, as developed in this course, will
make you an effective employee in your chosen career? How can the concepts learned in this
course help you to work more effectively with others on the job?
Refer to the Course Schedule within the Syllabus for specific project deliverables and due dates.

Psychology and Media Paper
Abstract
You will write your abstract in BLOCK format and it should present a basic overview of your papers content. It
should be written after the paper is complete. Make sure it is approximately 150 words.
Psychology and Media Paper
Psychological Construct
Introduce your topic, not the media source. Here is where you will introduce your topic making sure to
define it. If you are writing a specific psychological disorder, make sure to note the following: define,
symptoms, etiology (cause), prevalence rate and treatment. If you are focusing on a theory or other
psychological construct, make sure to provide all information in relation to the construct and this could include:
theorist, understanding, opposing viewpoints and historical overview. This section of your paper will be
approximately 2 to 3 pages long.
Media Illustration
In this section of the paper you will use the media source you selected to illustrate your construct. So,
you will need to make a direct connection between the construct and the media source. For example, if I was
writing about, A Beautiful Mind, and I am discussing the symptoms of schizophrenia that John Nash exhibits, I
would note what the symptoms are and then pick a scene to describe that will help the reader understand how
the symptoms impacted the character and the people that loved him. This section of your paper should be 1-2
pages long.
Conclusion
Here is where you will share your final thoughts on both the construct and the media source. This section should
be 1 to 2 paragraphs in length.
