Describe the work of art formally –

1. Is this a “history painting” (a moralizing illustration of a story from the Bible, mythology, legend, or historical events), a portrait, a genre subject, a landscape, a still life, or something else?  Here is the list of categories (Hierarchy of Genres) on Wikipedia:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hierarchy_of_genres
2. Describe what you see – figures, landscape, buildings, animals, weather, etc
3. Where do you see these images? The foreground or the background? Or on a groundline?
4. Describe the colors as you describe the figures, landscape, buildings, animals, etc.
5. Are the colors bold, pale, shocking, faded, etc?
6. Can you identify the fashion of the time? Does the fashion tell us about the period or the class of the people?
7. Do the figures fill the picture plane? Are the figures tiny in a vast landscape or interior?

Tell us about the iconography of the figures, things or setting –

1. Return to the examples in Gardner for an idea of what items in your painting have iconographic meaning. I suggest the Arnofini Double Portrait
2. Tell us the story about gods and goddess or the sitter in a portrait or the biblical character/s or the characters in a myth or legend.
3. For figures in “genre” paintings or sculpture (artwork about anonymous ordinary people, like skaters on a pond or shoppers in the street), tell us about their class, identifiable professions, family roles, or place in society.

• Tell us the story in the work of art or the biography of the sitter in the portrait
• Describe the circumstances in a scene from daily life, such as a couple walking in a garden.
• Can you connect the personal life of the artist to the scene in the painting or sculpture?
• Can you connect the faith of the culture to the subject matter in this work of art?
• Can you connect the history of the artwork’s context to the work of art?

For architecture:

• Can you connect the faith of the culture to the building?
• Can you connect the social activities of the contemporary culture to the building?
