countries is 62.28

Data Sources / Time span
•
1 . HDI retrieved from The UNDP 1990 2017 ).
•
2 . Income GINI Coefficient retrieved from The UN Development
Program ( 2017
•
3 . Poverty headcount ratios at national poverty lines (percent of the
population) retrieved from The World Bank ( 2000 2018
Preliminary results / main observations
•
The HDI value in Thailand showing from 1980 to 2018
•
HDI is increasing gradually since 1980 which was 0.503 to reach 0.765 in
2018
•
Thailand s HDI value in 2011 is 0.729 , which in same year had upgraded
from lower middle to upper middle in income economy.
•
Thailand s Income GINI coefficient in 2017 is 36.50
•
The poverty headcount ratio in Thailand started at 69.60 % and it
declined to reach 7.80 % in 2017
Expected outcome
•
The HDI of Thailand will increase in future because of the constant
growth of the three components index.
•
The inequality and poverty rate in Thailand are increasing in latest
years, but there are a big awareness of problem and optimism to
get a better rate of inequality and poverty in future.

Development Path
General Information
Students are to choose a developing country (any country does is not classified as high-income country by the World Bank https://datahelpdesk.worldbank.org/knowledgebase/articles/906519), and write a report on the evolution of economic development observed in that country since 1980. This will include, for example, statistics on economic growth; the change in per capita income levels, population, and other relevant statistics that characterise the level of development attained from 1980 to the present. The report will also analyse the key reason(s) why the country has performed the way it has over the past decades. This should include reference to the economic theories that are covered in the course.
The report should demonstrate your ability to:
• Explain the process of economic development and how socio-cultural, political, historical and economic factors affect this process.
• Research and gather the key economic statistics that characterise the economic development of the country chosen (e.g. income per capita and the Human Development Index).
• Highlight how this compares with other countries (if you choose to compare).
• Organise these statistics in a concise way (e.g. with tables and illustrations).
• Demonstrate a capacity to use economic principles in the analysis of the chosen development path and explain why the selected economy has performed the way it has (reflecting on how these principles fit within a broader global context).
• Plan and structure the report so that ideas\concepts are logically linked together.
• Demonstrate precise use of language.
The structure of the report:
1. Each report should be submitted in Word format, respecting the word count (no more than 2,000 words not including tables, figures and references), and using Times New Roman font, in size 12 with single line space. The report in Word format should include all relevant tables and figures.
2. The report should include the following general sections (subsections with their respective titles and subtitles can be added)
a. A title that must be of the following format: “(name of your country)’s Development Path”
b. A brief descriptive abstract (No more than 100 words)
c. A table of contents
d. A table of figures (graphs, diagrams, etc.) and tables
e. A brief introduction
f. The body of the report (with titles and subtitles of your choice)
g. A brief conclusion (note that you are NOT required to write recommendations)
h. A list of your references (at least five). Please use APA style in your citations and referencing.
Specific Contents of the Report
The specific contents of the report, including what development indicators you use and what development theories you refer to will highly depend on your chosen country and its characteristics. Please discuss the specific contents with your tutor. We usually recommend starting the analysis with the evolution of the chosen country’s Human Development Index (HDI) and its components and then focus on some important and interesting aspect in its development process.
