You may choose the topic for your research paper.  I would encourage you to pick a topic you want to learn more about.  This topic might be new to you: maybe you’ve always wanted to know about the development of Bolivia’s constitution, or you might write about something already familiar: maybe you are a musician and you want to learn more about a particular period or composer; maybe your family is in a business about which you know a lot, but you’ve never organized your knowledge or done research of your own about the topic.   That is to say, choose something that interests you; that choice will lead to an interesting paper, more likely than not.  This course is designed with the assumption that you will continue to work on the topic used for your exploratory essay, but you may change topics between exploratory essay and research paper.

Your topic may be either argumentative or informative.  I have received excellent papers of each kind.  The parameters of the paper are quite simple:  it must be 9-12 pages long (longer is fine) (MLA format:  double-spaced, Times New Roman 12-point font), incorporating 8-10 sources (more is okay).

Before you write the paper, you will produce a plan for it (a prospectus—see the prospectus assignment sheet) and hand that in.  You will also produce an annotated bibliography for the research project.  You must hand in a draft of the essay, along with the final.

Pay particular attention to your reader’s level of knowledge about the topic.  Of course, in practice that reader is me.  However, you should also write for an educated reader of general knowledge.  You can assume familiarity with major historical and cultural events, but don’t assume specialized knowledge of your topic.  I might know that DC Comics exist, but I wouldn’t be expected to know the history and evolution of the company, for instance.

When you cite information, use MLA parenthetical in-text citing format.  Also create a works-cited list.

Please remember that you should cite information that cannot be assumed as general knowledge.  A general reader might know that Wordsworth and Coleridge published Lyrical Ballads in 1795, but should not be expected to know the year Wordsworth’s mother died, or when he first began attending a boarding school.

If you have questions about citation, by all means, speak with me, with your Library 10 teacher, or with a librarian.  I am happy to receive email examples with questions about citation.

Above all, write about something that fascinates or excites you, something you think the world really ought to know about.  Such an approach is likely to make your reader feel he or she is fascinated by the topic, too, and really should know about.

The purpose of a research prospectus is usually to decide what you want to write about, identify sources you will use, develop a working thesis, and coming up with an outline (formal or informal) of what you want to include in the paper and the order of presentation you plan to use.  “Prospectus,” in this sense, means “a look forward,” “a plan.”   You have already accomplished several purposes that working on a prospectus will fulfill, while working on your Exploratory Essay:

  1. You have decided on a topic that interests you.  You have had a chance to talk with me and with each other about your topic.
  2. You have identified and reviewed several research sources. You will add 3-5 more sources for the research paper.
  3. You have identified several questions you would like to answer about your topic, and perhaps one main question to answer.
  4. You have thought about what interests you about this particular topic, and you have been specific about your connection to the topic.
  5. You have considered what you already know, especially if your previous background helped you define a topic of particular interest.

You have already done a lot of the work for your research paper.

As you proceed you should continue to be flexible in your ideas, because as you do further research and learn more about the topic, you might want to modify the focus to reflect your new knowledge. But you have a reasonably good idea about what you want to write.

I want you to write this prospectus so you will continue to develop a clear plan for your paper, and so I can provide feedback on your paper as you continue to work on your topic.

What to Include in the Finished Prospectus:

Your prospectus will consist of three parts:

  • an introductory statement about the topic, along with a working thesis. (This is a draft of the introduction of the research paper, itself.)
  • an outline (formal or informal) of the paper, and
  • an annotated bibliography

One way to think about this part of the project is that a prospectus should be complete enough that someone else should be able to take over the project and finish it, based on the work you have done to produce the prospectus.

Essay Assignment:  An Exploratory Essay

An exploratory essay is a well organized, developed record of your exploration of a particular topic, using research sources.  For example, you might investigate whether California should continue to use capital punishment, whether Congress should raise taxes on particular groups of earners, or how to best conserve water for the State of California.  Your handout (in the Week 09 Module for online classes) includes a sample exploratory essay in the excerpt from Ch. 2 of Writing Argumentsby Ramage, Bean, and Johnson.  This is a student on pages 44-50 (“Should Fast-Food Workers Be Paid $15 per Hour”) of that chapter.   Be sure to read that sample essay.

As you work on your essay, choose four-five sources that address your topic.  You can use books, articles in scholarly journals or magazines, newspaper editorials, blog posts, films, or any other source that explores your topic.  (You’ll notice that the student whose essay is included in your handout used several journal articles found in an internet data base, an online news source, and a magazine article.)  As you read (or watch) your sources, keep a record of your responses and the evolution of your thought on your topic.  You will also prepare short summaries of each source.

For a useful guide to organizing an exploratory essay, be sure to see page 43 of the handout.

As explained there, your essay should begin with an introductory paragraph that establishes the importance of your question, includes enough background information about your topic to help your reader engage with it, perhaps explains your interest in the issue, and includes a clear statement of the question you are exploring.

The body paragraphs of your essay will summarize each source you investigate, analyze the source’s rhetorical context (see, for example, the student essay on pages 44-50, along with the chart of genres of argument on pages 26-29), and give your response to the source.  What does the source add to your understanding of or thoughts about the topic?  Does it raise questions?  Is it lacking in particular ways?  You might discuss, too, why you chose a particular source. (Did another source raise a question?  Did you need more information to decide your own position on a topic?)

You don’t have to decide at each point in your exploratory essay exactly what your position is on the sources you use; rather, demonstrate your real engagement with your sources, and present a record of how your thinking changes as you read or watch the material.

Your concluding paragraph doesn’t have to give a final, definitive statement of your position on the issue, either.  If you haven’t arrived at a final position, report accurately, and in detail, what you now think about the issue, what further investigation you need to do to continue to develop your thoughts, and what you think the general direction of your developing opinion is.

Your final exploratory essay should be 4-6 pages long, double spaced.
