I need someone to read the research and answer the questions with at least 2 reference. The integumentary system is an essential organ system that protects the body from the invasion of harmful substances and helps to maintain homeostasis. One procedure involving the integumentary system is a rhytidectomy. A rhytidectomy, also known as a facelift, is a type of cosmetic surgery procedure used to give a more youthful facial appearance. The procedure consists of tightening the tissues under the skin and excising extra facial and neck skin to reduce visible signs of aging. “Depending on the degree of change you’d like to see, your facelift choices include a traditional facelift, limited incision facelift or a neck lift. A traditional facelift incision often begins in the hairline at the temples, continues around the ear and ends in the lower scalp. Fat may be sculpted or redistributed from the face, jowls and neck and underlying tissue is repositioned, commonly the deeper layers of the face and the muscles are also lifted. Skin is redraped over the uplifted contours and excess skin is trimmed away. A second incision under the chin may be necessary to further improve an aging neck. Sutures or skin adhesives close the incisions.” (Corbin & Kolder). All in all, a rhytidectomy is a cosmetic procedure used to achieve a patient’s facial rejuvenation goals. An individual may choose to undergo this procedure for a couple of reasons. Most often, the procedure is done to improve one’s personal appearance and self-confidence; though, a reconstructive rhytidectomy is also performed on individuals to repair the appearance of injuries or correct the appearance of medical conditions such as birth defects or deformities. “As you get older, the appearance and shape of your face is altered because of normal age-related changes. Your skin becomes less elastic and looser, and fat deposits decrease in some areas of your face and increase in others.” (Mayo Clinic, 2018). Unfortunately, this procedure doesn’t come risk free, so it is up to the individual to decide for themselves whether the benefits outweigh the risks for getting the procedure done. For starters, a rhytidectomy does not last forever. This means that in the future another procedure may be necessary to maintain results as your face continues to age despite the procedure. Furthermore, “In both men and women, a facelift can lead to distorted earlobes. If too much skin is removed, the face can look pulled-back or startled.” (Brazier, 2017). Additionally, “long-term or permanent complications, while rare, can cause significant changes in appearance. The risks include: Hematoma, scarring, nerve injury, hair loss, and skin loss.” (Mayo Clinic, 2018). These are just some of the possible complications one can encounter when undergoing a rhytidectomy procedure. A rhytidectomy has many effects on the integumentary system. To start, some of the direct effects of the procedure are “tightness, numbness, and subtle swelling possibly will last several months.” (Cleveland Clinic, 2018). Some of the indirect effects the procedure has on the integumentary system are poor wound healing, skin irregularities, and discoloration of the skin. Ultimately, the effects of this procedure can create an imbalance within the integumentary system which directly affects the system’s ability to maintain homeostasis. In the end, it is up to the patient to decide if the benefits of the procedure are worth the risks and possible complications. After reading please answer this questions about the research: What are the pros and cons of the procedure your classmate has described? Why do you think the number of these procedures are increasing each year
