In this 3-5-page ** essay, you will demonstrate your ability to read closely, think critically, and write coherently to substantiate an academic argument, in this case focusing on literary analysis: This means no summary of the assigned works, no reports on authors of those works, and no casual personal wanderings. Your essay will establish an analytical claim (the thesis) that demands support and prove that analytical claim (evidence); this claim may address one assigned reading or multiple assigned readings. The essay does not require and should not utilize outside research; rather, your own ideas are the focus of these critical analyses of genres, themes, literary techniques, and/or movements in the readings. Clearly, part of your task in this assignment is the development of your own topic. What have you noticed about the readings that you would like to pursue more thoroughly? The thesis must be a clear statement–one statement in the introductory paragraph–that establishes a claim that needs to be proven; the introductory paragraph must provide a context to get the reader set to read the essay.
