Note-taking for Literary Elements Analysis
Each time we read a text (poem, story or play), you will be assigned this template to complete. It is a graded assignment (30 points)and will sometimes appear in Discussions so everyone can see your ideas, and sometimes it will be submitted as a regular assignment, where no one else is able to see it. Aside from letters A-D, students should never respond with only one statement.
The assignment looks like this:
A. Title:
B. Author:
C. Assigned Literary Element(s):
D. Write the theme of the work (Everyone does this):
E. Formal Definition(s) from notes or text:
F. Evidence of Element in Text:
You will need more than a few lines for this component. Be sure to include quotation marks and the page number where the example came from.
G. Significance or Contribution to Story Overall: Below are a few questions to get some thoughts generated. You can respond to one, some, all or none of them and address a different idea. These questions probably won’t work for every element in every plot; but, these questions can at least get you thinking.
1. How / In what ways does the text evidence you provide reflect the element you’re assigned?
2. How does your assigned element affect the readers’ perception of the work?
3. What does the element do for the story (avoid relying on saying it makes the story interesting)?
H. Connection(s) to social issues / culture / human condition:
I. Additional Ideas or Questions: Avoid being basic in this section.
