WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT: TWO-PART ESSAY 25%
PURPOSE
Students demonstrate their ability to apply the theories and thinking articulated in the course content to the world in which
they live.
DESCRIPTION & EVALUATION
The end result is a single essay. The essay will comprise TWO “case studies” worth 10% each. The first case study will be
submitted in the form of a mini paper: a well written, grammatically correct, analysis of a problem, 750 words in length. The
first is due before reading week. The second case study will be written beneath the first, in the original document. It will
include a short introduction and a summary enclosing both case studies, worth 5%. It is due before the end of term.
1. Case Study 1 10%
2. Case Study 2 10%
3. Introduction, Summary, Bibliography 5%
DUE
The first submission is due before reading week: October 20th
.
The second submission is due by the end of term.
There are two due dates at the end of term. You have a choice.
December 2nd for feedback.
December 9th for no feedback.
SUBMISSION
Submit your entries using the links under Essay Assignment. I will return the first submission to you, with feedback. You will
resubmit the original document by the second due date, including the second case study, introduction and conclusion.
LATE SUBMISSIONS
You can apply for an extension 48 hours before the due date of the first submission. Without an extension, late penalties of
5% per day will be applied up to 50%. So, if you hand in your first case study 10 days after the due date, your submission
will be graded out of 5 instead of out of 10. Please note, however, you can hand in the first submission for a total of 5 marks
until the final due date for the essay
CONTENT
For each case study choose a real-world issue in which there is a problem that may be thought about in terms of good and
evil. Most of the problems will fall into one of the following categories.
Fictional
Political
Personal
Social
Environmental
Educational
Historical
Other
Both of your chosen “problems” should fall into a different category. Neither of your chosen problems should
replicate examples in the course materials. They should be problems that you identify for yourself in the world
around you.
For each of the problems you will choose one or more of the ways of thinking about (theories of) good and evil
that we have covered in the course up to the point of your submission. You will show how the theories apply to
the problem; how they offer a way of thinking about, and analysing, the problem.
IMPORTANT: In your TWO entries you must cover at least THREE different theories/ways of thinking.
FORMAT
• Ultimately you will submit both case studies in the same document. You will add the second case study to
the first in your final submission.
• Each case study should be around 750 words. Significantly more or less than this word count will incur
penalties.
• You should include a title page with the word count (change the word count when you make your second
submission).
• Entries should be submitted in a Word document, Times Roman 12 pt
• Entries will be graded on written English, use of paragraphs etc.
• APA citation style (plagiarism will result in 0)
RECOMMENDED OUTLINE OF EACH CASE STUDY
1. Very brief introduction stating the problem and the theories you will use to unpack it.
2. A concise description of the problem (including references)
3. Analysis of problem using the theories/ways of thinking.
4. Very brief summary, indicating whether you think the theory is helpful
FINAL ESSAY OUTLINE
1. Title page
2. Introduction
3. Case study 1
4. Case study 2
5. Summary
RUBRIC
You will be graded on the following:
1. Understanding of course theories of good and evil
2. Critical application of these theories to real life situations
3. Evidence of detailed research backing up understanding and critical application (including references)
4. Choice of, and articulation of, applicable real-life situation
5. Written English – grammar, diction, paragraphs, punctuation
6. Citation and referencing
7. Format
8. Length
Please bear in mind that this essay is an evaluation of your ability to show your understanding of course materials
and to apply that understanding to a clearly articulated problem. It is not about your opinion.
REFERENCES AND PLAGIARISM
Your case studies will be greatly strengthened when they are backed up by cited research. This means that you will
reference and quote the course materials (lectures and readings) and you will reference and quote articles or texts
related to your chosen real world “problems.” Where the problem you have chosen is a personal one, this will not
be possible. But where the problem is a political/social one or a fictional one there will be sources (news articles,
papers, the TV script) that you can reference.
IMPORTANT: you must provide citations in APA style for the source of all your information. Submissions that
include three or more uncited, “copy and pasted” sentences off the Internet (or elsewhere) will be given an
automatic 0. Repeated instances of plagiarism over the three journal entries will result in a charge of academic
misconduct.
