Psychology 154: Social Psychology

Objective: In this power point/Google slide presentation, students will address how social media both perpetuates prejudice and can be used to combat prejudice. The goal of the activity is for students to consider whether social media has increased, decreased, or has no overall effect on stereotypical beliefs and prejudicial attitudes.

Students will select a social media site (Instagram) and a concept from chapter 9 (“Racial Prejudice”). Students will access websites, or apps, to find posts that reflect negative stereotypes. Students will also find posts that take a social justice perspective on the topic (e.g., the site suggests ways to combat these attitudes and beliefs).

EXAMPLES: Facebook – search suggestions include typing in key words such as “racism,” “sexism,” or “homophobia,” “hate Obama” “politically correct” or “Muslim terrorist.”

Twitter – search suggestions include, “I’m not racist, but,” “ageism and Bernie Sanders,” or “everyday sexism.”

**Once again, these are only suggestions, and each student must discuss (in their presentation) which keywords were used.

Students may have different research interests, and as a group, students will develop a way to collectively present them. Students will present their findings on a slide presentation and must address the “Discussion Questions” (below).

In addition, students must also research one scholarly journal to provide support toward their analysis, and include it in their presentation (APA citation must be present on one slide).

What do the posts want you as the reader to come away believing about different social groups? How do you know?

Based on what you saw in the posts you reviewed, would you conclude that prejudice and discrimination are increasing, decreasing, or staying the same? Explain your reasoning.

Can you do it in the power point version. And 3 main slides required.
