EXERCISE 7C

Write sentences using each of the three kinds of verbal phrases based on the verbs force, write, and earn. Remember, you’re not being asked to use the given verb in the independent clause; instead, create verbal phrases as in the example. Write a different sentence for each verb ending, as demonstrated in the example.

-ing: Discovering that the nightclub owner is stubborn, the human rights commissioner threatens to shut down the club.
-ed: Her manuscript, discovered beneath the floorboards of the college library, is now being auctioned on eBay.
to: The main character had to travel across Nigeria to discover the truth her family had hidden from her for so many years.

For each grouping below, combine the material into a single sentence, using one sentence as the independent clause and transforming the others to -ing verbal phrases. Then, try a different combination, placing different material in the independent clause. Feel free to switch the order of the information, too.
