Due by: May 8th, before 5pm via Blackboard as a Word or PDF file
This extra credit assignment is optional but provides the opportunity to earn up to 10 points
that will be added to your your score in any of the exams. Submissions that address the
question as it is posed will receive the full points, while those that do not will receive partial
credit. The points will be added to your exam grade. You choose which exam you want the
points added to.
For the assignment, you will go one of the museums listed and visit the appropriate exhibit
in order to answer the questions of your choosing below. With your submission, you MUST
include your ticket or ticket receipt by taking a picture or scanning it and adding it to your
submission. Responses must be at least 2 pages double-spaced, in Times New Roman
font with 1 inch margins. Do not plagiarize any information from the web or from
museum labels! You can include photos if you’d like, but there must be at least two pages
worth of text regardless.
For whichever exhibit you choose to visit, consider the following questions. You don’t have
to answer all of them, but use them for guidance as you take notes on the exhibit and
write your paper:
• What is being displayed and what is being portrayed about the human past?
• What aspects of life are being interpreted?
• What is your favorite artifact and why?
• What would you change to make the exhibit better?
• What part did you find most interesting?
• What did you learn?
• Does this exhibit address concerns that are pertinent in the modern world?
• Is there an overriding message?
• Does the exhibit communicate that message clearly?
Following are the exhibits that you may choose to visit, and some additional questions that
you may consider that are specific to the exhibit:
At the Metropolitan Museum of Art:
1.The Mesoamerican and South American galleries (BOTH GALLERIES)
• Compare the art of Mesoamerica and South America
• Do you see any similarities between the two? Any differences?

• You need to explore the entire collection, not just one small exhibit
• From the Egyptian art in the museum, what do you think the position of women was in
relation to men?
• Did you see any commoners depicted in the exhibits? If so, in what ways do their
representations differ from the elites?
At the American Museum of Natural History:
1.The Hall of Eastern Woodlands Indians
• What does the Folsom Point on display tell us about human occupation of the
Americas?
• Describe the different types of houses and lodgings that groups there built.
• Discuss some of the traditional cultures in the region and their characteristics.
2.The Hall of South American Peoples
• What parallels can you find here to topics we studied in class?
• What does the silver llama figurine from Lake Titicaca tell us about the people that
made it?
• What is your favorite artifact in the Hall of South American Peoples? Why?
3.The Hall of Human Origins
• Did anything impress you concerning the representation of hominids?
• What is being displayed and what is being portrayed about the human past?
• What aspects of life are being interpreted?
At the Brooklyn Museum
1.Life, Death, and Transformation in the Americas
• What are the various cultures represented in the exhibit?
• Do any of the pieces directly relate to what was discussed in lectures?
• How do the artifacts on display relate to each other?
2. Ancient Egyptian Art
• You need to explore the entire collection, not just one small exhibit
• From the Egyptian art in the museum, what do you think the position of women was in
relation to men?

ANTH 1400: Digging the Past
• Did you see any commoners depicted in the exhibits? If so, in what ways do their
representations differ from the elites?
Remember, all of these questions are suggestions in order to help you as you walk
through the museum and write your paper. It is not required that you answer all of them,
just that you address the exhibit and relate what you see appropriately to the concepts
covered in class. Take a lot of notes while you’re there so that you’ll remember your
thoughts and impressions for later when you’re writing the paper. Good luck, and I hope
that you find the assignment enjoyable.
Keep in mind as well that the museums are donation-based. That is, the entrance fee
amounts are suggested and not mandatory, so if you wish to pay less, they accept it

Thursdays, and 11AM to 6PM Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
• The National Museum of the American Indian is open 10AM-5PM daily, Thursdays to
8PM. [As part of the Smithsonian Institution, this museum is free and if you choose this
museum you need to answer the first questions alone.]
