Chapter 2 Movies Descriptive Statistics Project Assignment Technology Based Projects make use of the TI graphing calculator, and may be done groups of up to four members. Turn in one copy with all of the group members’ names on the project. Late papers will receive a grade of 0. There are 3 options for submitting projects:
1. Projects may be handed in at the beginning of an exam (if the due date is the same), and all pages must be STAPLED, or
2. Projects may be uploaded in Canvas by the due date and time as a SINGLE file (not folder) attachment. If I cannot open your attachment, your grade is 0. There should be exactly ONE attachment, from one upload. I will grade one file only.
Be sure to include your graphs with this project in a single document when you turn it in.

Chapter 2: Descriptive Statistics Project
NOTE: Technology Based Projects make use of the TI graphing calculator, and may be done
groups of up to four members. Turn in one copy with all of the group members’ names on the
top.
Late papers will receive a grade of 0. Be sure to include your histogram and boxplot with this
project in a single document when you turn it in.
Student Learning Outcomes:
•

•
The student will construct a histogram and a box plot.
The student will calculate univariate statistics.
The student will examine the graphs to interpret what the data implies.
The Data: (40) De Anza students were asked how many movies (at the movie theatre) they saw
in August. The data is summarized in the table below.

1. Fill out the table. Give relative frequency and cumulative relative frequency to 4 decimal
places.
2. Construct a histogram. Sketch the graph using a ruler and pencil, or computer. Scale and
label the axes. Be sure to turn this in! Remember – no data value may be an endpoint of an
interval. An interval CANNOT go from 4 to 5. Consider making the first bar go from -0.5 to
0.5 (so 0 is in the middle). The histogram may be drawn here or on a separate page.
3. Give the following to 4 decimal places: (HINT: Use 1VarStats on your calculator)
a. The sample mean x =
b.
The sample standard deviation s =
4. Are the data discrete or continuous? How do you know? Give your answer as a complete
sentence.
5. Give the following to 2 decimal places:
a. Minimum value =
b. Median =
c. Maximum value =
d. First quartile =
e. Third quartile =
f. IQR =
g. 40th percentile
6. Fill in the blanks with an appropriate number: The middle 50% of the students saw between
_________ and ___________ movies at the movie theatre in August.
7. What does the 40th percentile represent in this problem? (i.e. interpret the 40th percentile)
Give your answer as a complete sentence. Your answer should include “students” and
“movies”, and “40%”, and the value of the 40th percentile.
8. Are there any potential outliers? Which value(s) is (are) it (they)? Use a formula (show
this!) to check the end values to determine if they are potential outliers.
9. Construct a box plot of data. Sketch the graph using a ruler and pencil, or computer. Scale
and label the (ONE) axis. Be sure to turn this in. The box plot may be drawn here or on a
separate page.
10. Using the sample statistics, show your work to find the number that is 1.5 standard
deviations: (give answer to 4 decimal places)
a. Above the mean:
b. Below the mean:
