Satire uses humor to make an argument. Usually satire
involves using an exaggerated example, or arguing the opposite
position in an exaggerated way to show the flaws in that
position. Satire also uses irony, which is when someone says
one thing while really meaning something else. For example,
when a student asks if class will be ending early, and the teacher
says “I feel so valued and loved!” the teacher is using irony to
point out how the student’s request may come across as a slight
on that class. Another example of how satire works is that it
sometimes draws a humorous comparison to something
unrelated to show how the same arguments apply. We will be
watching a short video on consent and tea that does this.
Humor can be hard to convey in writing. Think about the
argument that you want to make, and then try to think what the
best way to make it would be. Would irony, or arguing the
opposite position in an exaggerated way work? Is there an
extreme example that you could use? Can you think of a
comparison that you can make that could illustrate your point?
