Evolution of Retailing Presentation NO COPIED CONTENT…I’VE PROVIDED THE POWERPOINT TEMPLATE BELOW TO IMPLEMENT ANSWERS TO THE FOLLOWING SCENARIO:
STANDARD PROBLEM SOLVING EXERCISE
You are the Logistics Manager for “Pie in the Sky” manufacturing. You’ve just come back from the President’s office where you got a chewing out again. The boss chewed you out for the second straight month because of the increasing percentage of raw materials for your new toy, the flying pie, are damaged when received. He has told you to breakout your problem solving tools and get the problem fixed.
You go back to your office feeling pretty bad. You get right to work on the problem. Here are the facts that you know:
a. Suppliers:Randy and Rusty’s plastics and Tony’s rubber and metals.
b. You receive two shipments per week from each supplier.
c. The shipments should be inspected before leaving your suppliers and again by the company’s shipping and receiving department.
d. Shipping and receiving moves the raw materials to the storage area until it’s pulled for use (a week after delivery).
e. The storage area is managed by a man, Jimmy, who is in his sixties and not in good health. He has one permanent employee and two students who work after school for a few hours.
f. The raw materials are moved to the production line on Monday and Wednesday.Jimmy and his permanent employee retrieve the materials and forklift the pallets to the production area. This is done early in the morning before the factory workers come in.Now you remember hearing some complaints about the materials not being secured on the pallets.
g. The production line workers remove the materials from packing and move them by hand to the beginning of the production line to start the process.
h. The raw materials, especially the plastic, are delicate. The materials, if dropped can be damaged.
i. The materials make their way through production line and come out on the end; a finished product ready to ship. The same crew that delivered the materials to the line, pick-up the finished products, and return them to the storage area for packing and shipping. The packing and shipping is not outsourced.
j. You have a computer system that tracks all materials, finished products, shipment to customers, and financial transactions. However, it’s become outdated and the information contained is not always reliable.
Now that you have some basic facts, you can start solving this problem. You remember back to your school days when you took supply chain management. You remember your great instructor and the Standard Problem- Solving that you were taught.
Using the 7 step method below analyze and solve the above problem. There are two ways to do this assignment; 1) Only looking at what’s known – topical only, and 2) Drilling down beyond the known and thinking outside the box. Please be creative and drill down into the information.
