The Impact of 2018 US Steel Tariffs.
Tariffs as the one of most significant way is to protect country’s benefit within
the international trade. Although the tariffs on manufactured products are declined
after WWII, most countries are still putting high tariffs on agricultural commodities.
Recently, the United States unusually increased 25% steel and 10% aluminum import
tariffs for Europe and Canada. This new tariff policy caused some people become
winner and some not. In present Trump’s view, this new policy really protects US
manufacture and increased government revenue; however, it still caused some
controversial problems in global market.
First, US steel producers gains profits after the steel tariffs increased. As we
know, the price is one of important part of competitiveness in modern manufacturing.
Especially in Steel manufacturing, most countries have same productivity since it
does not include too much high technology. When two factories have almost the same
productivity in producing steel, the price is becoming a determining factor for
consumers. After the US increased the steel tariffs, domestic consumers would like to
buy US steel instead of import steel, since the foreign steel have higher price but in
same quality. Therefore, the term of trade in US will grow and the price of steel in
domestic market will also raise. In results, the US steel producers will get huge
benefits in the steel import tariffs.
Second, the US consumers may be affected by the steel tariffs in other areas.
For example, the steel and aluminum are the fundamental martials for many
infrastructure products. The increase of steel and aluminum import tariffs will
absolutely increase the cost of those products. Even though US infrastructure
manufacturer can buy steel and aluminum from domestic producers instead of foreign
imports, they still need to face the increasing price of domestic steel since domestic
producers do not worry about the competition of low cost of steel and aluminum
import. There is another serious problem for United States, since the huge demand of
steel and aluminum in US market, the domestic factories cannot supply enough steel
and aluminum in short time; therefore, some new factories are urgently constructing.
Meantime, the leak of steel and aluminum supply caused the cost of cars increased
which affects the consumers’ benefits in short time. Furthermore, some small
companies have to be shut down in United States because they cannot afford high cost
of steel or aluminum as the raw materials for their products. In order to deal with the
US steel import tariffs, foreign countries are going to increase US products import
tariffs which will cause US product to facing export decline. For instance, some
countries will increase the US agriculture import tariffs. It is obviously that the US
agriculture exports will decrease, and farmers’ real income will drop too. As a large
agriculture country, the US will suffer more economic loss compare to the profits
from steel import tariffs.
Third, the employment rate will generally decline in the future. Although the
US steel factories will need to hire more workers in order to satisfy the amount of
steel demand in short time, the steal manufacturing can not provide economic benefits
contrast to service and technology industries. In addition, the increasing of foreign
countries import tariffs will also cause the unemployment in agriculture or other areas
in US.
In conclusion, the effects of increasing tariffs in big or small countries are
different. For United States, the large nation imposes an import tariffs usually causes
higher domestic price for this commodity, and consumers surplus will drop. Although,
the US government revenue will gain after imposed this import tariffs, the US
consumers won’t get benefits in long run, and same in global market.
