In Edgar Allen Poe’s short story, “The Cask of
Amontillado,” Poe deals with one very singular
character motive for action- revenge. We
could say that his “single effect” is to make us
consider an act of pure revenge for a wrong of
which we, as readers, have no understanding.
But the reason for Montresor’s feelings of
injury or harm or insult really do not matter.
What does matter is what he does to
Fortunato- walls him up alive! Montresor says:
“Nemo me impune lacessit.” [Trans. “No one
attacks (harms, provokes) me with impunity
(with no punishment)] For this last Forum, I
would like for us to discuss a topic we have not
discussed thus far this semester- revenge in
the face of being wronged. In Montresor’s
case, revenge made him resort to doing evil;
however, is there ever an incident when
revenge is called for, and have you ever
