IRLS603 First World War Essay Please use the attached essay assignments and build on and take into consideration the remarks on the papers by the professor. Thanks!Assignment InstructionsThis assessment is a progressive assignment, intended to provide an opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of war, its fundamental character, its root causes, its execution, and its results. Based on this understanding you will analyze a war of your choice from the fundamental conflict(s) that produced it, and end by providing an alternative outcome to the conflict short of war. The simulated, alternative response will demonstrate greater value for the decision-maker(s) and for the societies involved. It will demonstrate how the alternative response developed could be relevant in resolving a similar circumstance of war reflecting a contemporary international conflict. Deliverable end of week 5: Assess the outcomes of the war. Include a discussion of the effects of the war on the political entities involved, the individual decision-makers, and on potential external actors – those political entities not involved in the engagement but impacted by its conduct and outcome. This segment should be 3 pages in length, double-spaced in 12 size font. (30 percent) Running head: THE FIRST WORLD WAR

THE FIRST WORLD WAR

The 20th century marked one of the coldest and bloodiest centuries in the history of
human welfare. The occurrence of wars and revolutions in the particular century resulted in
political, social and economic challenges making 20th century a period to remember in the
history of the world. One of the wars that took place during the 20th century is the First World
War which took place between the years 1914 to 1918. The First World War is also denoted as
the Great War. The beginning of the First World War can be traced back to the assassination of
an individual by the name Archduke Franz Ferdinand (Gatrell, 2014). The political entities that
were involved in the war include both the central and the allied powers. The allied powers
included countries such as; the United States, France, Britain, Russia, Japan, Romania and Italy.
The central powers who fought in the First World War include; German, the Ottoman Empire,
Bulgaria, and Austria Hungary (Bongiorno, 2018). Good start
Various factors contributed to the evolution of the First World War. One of the factors
that resulted in the occurrence of the First World War is the assassination of the leader by the
name Archduke Franz Ferdinand (Gatrell, 2014). Following the murder of the leader by the
Serbians, Austria resolved to fight back with the Serbia which was an ally to Russia. After the
ally of Austria, Hungary was mobilized by Russia, the war was declared on Russia and its ally by
Germany (Bongiorno, 2018). Britain also declared war on Germany after sympathizing with
France. ok
Mutual defense alliance is also another factor that triggered the occurrence of the First
World War. Countries had mutual agreements whereby they were required to help each other.
Before the occurrence of the First World War, there existed alliances among countries. For
instance, France and Russia, Britain and Japan are among the allies that existed before the
occurrence of the First World War (Gatrell, 2014). Other alliances that were prevalent before the

First World War include; Austria Hungry and Germany, Russia and France and Belgium, Britain
and France. As such, when Austria Hungary waged a conflict on Serbia, the allies of each of the
two countries arose to support the countries to which they were allied. Another cause which is
attributed to the First World War is imperialism (Bongiorno, 2018). Imperialism is used to
denote the situation whereby a nation takes over the possessions of another country especially
when the nation is under the subjection of the other country. During the end of the year 1900,
both Britain and France had acquired various continents a fact that intensified the rivalry
between Germany and the two countries (Gatrell, 2014). As such, Germany entered into a
scramble with France and Britain to acquire colonies. Good
Militarism is also another factor that triggered the occurrence of the First World War.
Between the period between 1870 and 1914, the armies of both France and Germany had
increased significantly. Such a move intensified the conflict between Britain and Germany. To
retaliate; British incepted a battle in the year 1906 which was denoted as “Dreadnought”.
Germany also incepted various battleships in the same year. Nationalism also contributed to the
emergence or evolution of the First World War (Brian, 2018). Nationalism is used to depict the
act of supporting the interests and rights of one’s nation. As explained earlier, the initial cause of
war is based on the demand or desire of the individuals in Herzegovina and Bosnia to break from
the Austria Hungary and form part of the Serbians (Gatrell, 2014). The ethnic and national
conflict resulted in the murder of Archduke Ferdinand. Nationalism of various nations resulted in
the extension of the war to other countries. The aspect of nationalism triggered countries to
demonstrate their dominance of power a fact that resulted in the evolution of the First World War
(Gatrell, 2014). Good

The Bosnian and Moroccan crises also resulted in the evolution of the First World War.
The Moroccans sought for their independence after they were handed over to France. Germany
declared its full support for Moroccan independence (Bongiorno, 2018).In the year 1911,
Germany waged war against the French since it wanted to retain back its possession of Morocco.
As a result, the two countries entered into an intense conflict which finally led to the rise of the
First World War. In the year 1908, Serbia entered into a conflict with Austria Hungary. The
primary rationale as to when they entered into a conflict is because Austria Hungary had taken
the possession of Bosnia and Serbians felt that they were to have Bosnia (Bakhturina, 2018). The
nations fought with each other, and the tensions between the two nations increased significantly.
The primary cause of the war can, therefore, be attributed to the tension r conflict between the
Serbians and Austria Hungary a fact that resulted in the murder of Archduke Ferdinand (Gatrell,
2014). The murder of the Serbian leader contributed to the evolution of the war since the Serbian
allies entered into war with the Central powers. Remember this was a specific alliance name;
capitalize it.
Regarding the decision makers of the First World War, it is imperative to denote that the
allied powers and the central powers are the major stakeholders that were involved in the war.
Therefore it was important for the stakeholders to come into a consensus and bring the war to an
end. The holding of diplomatic dialogues is one of the aspects that contributed to the ending of
the First World War. Germany was triggered to accept fully that it was the one to be blamed for
the war (Astashov, 2018). The country was also required to accept to pay for the damage and
reparations after the way. The decision made by Germany on whether to accept the responsibility
was vital in the ending of the First World War. Ideally; the leaders of France, Britain and the
United States were decision makers regarding the end or closure of the First World War. ok

Cause
On June 28th, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand the successor of Austria-Hungary dynasty and
his wife, Duchess of Hohenberg, were assassinated by Yugoslavian flag-waver?, Gavrilo Princip.
Gavrilo and his allies had the intention of unifying Yugoslavians and free them from being under
the Austria-Hungary rule. This assassination was the source of several successive events that
climaxed in the war between Austria-Hungary and Serbia. Due to the close relationship between
European nations, this war drew their attention which advanced worldwide and resulted in the
WWI, the first on its own accord in human history (Keegan, 2014).

Austria-Hungary knew they had the backing of Germany in deterring Russia from any
intervention; they decided to offer Serbia an unacceptable ultimatum. Even after the agreement

international arbitration, but Austria-Hungary used diplomacy to order partial mobilization
(Hewitson, 2014).
Germany also offered its ultimatum to Russia to stop its mobilization and another ultimatum to
France from giving in to be on neutral ground in case war erupts between Russia and Germany.
France and Russia neglected those ultimatums (Goemans, 2000). This compelled Germany to
mobilize its citizens and declared war against Russia, and at the same time, France ordered
general mobilization. When Germany saw the turn of events; it ordered Belgium free passage of
her troops across its neutral grounds and then declared war against France.
Events turned out that Germany troops invaded Belgium and since Britain was an ally to
Belgium and had no interest in fighting neither Russia nor Serbia, it set out to defend Belgium.
This resulted in Britain declaring war against Germany. Subsequently, nations entered into the
picture declared war against each other to defend their allies. It started with Austria-Hungary
declaring war against Russia, Serbia against Germany, Montenegro against Austria-Hungary and
Germany, France and Britain against Austria-Hungary, Japan against Germany, Austria-Hungary
against Japan and Belgium respectively(Royde-Smith, 2018).
Romania that had revived its secret anti-Russian alliance of 1883 with Central powers earlier
1914 resolved to remain neutral. Italy had agreed to Triple Alliance in 1912 decided to dishonor
it since it wasn’t allowed to support her allies in warfare and the original alliance of 1882
declared that the treaty wasn’t against Britain(Hewitson, 2014).
In September 1914, three nations that are Russia, France and England entered into Treaty of
London, all agreeing that they won’t have any agreement with Central Powers and thus forming
Allies.cite

The start of WWI in August 1914 was welcome by Europeans with courage and happiness. WWI
prompted a sense of patriotism and happy celebrations. It never crossed their mind of the
disastrous effect and the duration of the raging war among the mighty nations of Europe but was
convinced that their countries would emerge as the winners. The war was seen as a time to prove
their patriotism to their countries and as a form of defending one’s county against dynasties,
oppressive treaties, and unnecessary threats.
