Your specific goals are to write a critical book review in the following format: (a) introduction, (b) major points, (c) strengths and
weaknesses, (d) critical assessment, and (e) summary and conclusion.

This is truly an exercise in writing that will test not only the application of your knowledge but also your ability to express these
things in writing. Your accuracy will be graded alongside your writing skills.
THE RULES OF THE GAME:
You must use the academic genre throughout. Refer to the Publication Manual of the APA, Sixth Edition.
You must type your papers in Microsoft Word, using 12-point font Times or something equivalent, and the standard 1-inch
margins on all sides of the text.
You will not have room in your papers to quote more than one source directly. If you find other amazingly presented statements
that you simply must include, you will need to do this in an appendix, labeled with the header, “Valuable Quotations.”
You are to use APA formatting for your in-text citations and references.
Do not cite websites or newspaper articles. Use scholarly journal articles and books.
Although, I provide specific requirements, one of your tasks is to unify the requirements outlined below to form a coherent,
readable, and informative critical book review.
All of the items requested must be presented in complete academic sentences.
Do not use contractions (e.g., don’t, you’re, we’ll).
Do not capitalize theories.
Do not use an author’s first name in the body of the paper. Likewise, rarely is an initial for a first name used.
Try not to use semicolons.
• Do not use extra spaces in between paragraphs.
• Use spellcheck. No typos. Edit. Edit. Edit. Proofread. Read out loud. Proofread. Edit.

PUT YOUR PAPERS TOGETHER IN THIS FORMAT:

A title page indicating the title (keep it professional and informative), book title and author, your full name, the semester (i.e.,
Spring 2017), the course number, and the department, college, and university’s name.
Also type the title at the top of your first page of your text.
• Insert page numbers in the lower right corner.
• The body of your writing (double spaced) must use the following order and constraints.
Note that if I am grading your paper and I do not see the required elements in their proper places, I will count off rather than
search through your paper for the required information.
INTRODUCTION:

Outline, for the reader, the upcoming sections of the paper (see Knight, 2011, page 199, above “Theoretical Perspectives”).

• Describe the methods used to support the thesis or answer their research questions. In other words, discuss the data, sample
and sample size, study procedures, and analytic strategy. [Recommendation: 5-10 sentences]
• Describe the results/findings presented in the book. (Recommendation 5-10 sentences]
• Introduce the reader to the next section of the paper. (Recommendation: 1 sentence]

STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES:

addressed? How? Did the evidence provided in the book support the authors’ thesis or answer their research questions? In

• How is this book relevant to victimology? Apply three concepts or theories discussed in your textbook. Be sure to define these
concepts or theories. (Cite your textbook and the corresponding page numbers; you may NOT use concepts related to
“empathy” or “first-responder”) (Recommendation: 3-6 sentences)
Is the book sociologically grounded? For example, are the authors adequately conscious of the role of gender, race, or social
class? If so, how? If not, how could this be improved? (Recommendation: 3-5 sentences)

home message for your readers?]
Next identify where this book might be appropriately used. Is it a good book for undergraduate and graduate classes? Is it a good
book for the casual, non-academic reader? Why or why not? Was it appropriate for this class? Why or why not?
Conclude with one impactful statement that will inspire readers to read this book or care about the topic.

REFERENCE PAGE:
Your reference page should be typed on a separate page.
It should have 2-6 unique references listed on it (depending on whether or not you completed the bonus work)
• List the references in alphabetical order.
I recommend using Google Scholar’s “cite” feature to transform your in-text citations into references but double check them-
google is not always accurate (and the capitalization is not always appropriate).
