This analysis is based off of the medical practice I manage, Newport Faces Cosmetic Surgery, located in
Newport Beach, CA. We are a small, private practice with one doctor, one RN, one receptionist and
myself. The doctor owns the practice, but much prefers leaving business decisions to me – which is
great, but also scary sometimes! In the six months since I’ve joined the company, the Dr. F has gone
from working half time at our practice, half time working for a corporate plastics company. At the
beginning of the year, he decided to make the full plunge and work at Newport Faces full time. We have
more than doubled our conversion rate on surgical consults. However, the practice is only three years
old. Furthermore, Dr. F is not from this area, and his primary practice was centered out of San Diego. We
are too far away for most people to be able to refer us to family and friends when they discuss their
plastic surgeons, so we cannot rely on his excellent past to carry us forward much. (However, we do get
a patient or two a month that will drive up to Newport from San Diego to see Dr. F for Botox, fillers,
laser procedures, etc.) Right now our business is thriving on injectables – fillers such as Restylane or
Juvederm, toxins like Botox and Dysport, etc. – but we want to be thirving on surgery! We offer many
surgeries, but our primary is a lower face and neck lift. Patients often add on eyelid procedures, laser
resurfacing, etc. For this reason, we are aiming for an older population than we currently see – 40s to
70s ideally – though we are more than happy to see patients as young as 18 (VERY rarely anyone under
that unless it’s for scar revision or acne scarring – we do not perform any other procedures on patients
under 18.)
