STEP 1 SKIN CANCER

STEP 2 SUN EXPOSURE AND TANNING BED Project description:
The principles of epidemiology can be used in a variety of different fields when evaluating any
type of association between an “exposure and an “outcome”. You and your fellow group
members must pick a specific exposure/outcome association that interests you (you should use
the same outcome that one of your groups used for the group presentation). Your group will
design an appropriate study to investigate your chosen association using many of the
epidemiologic concepts covered in class. You will then prepare a brief write-up of your
proposed study, ensuring you cover the following specific points.
Project specifics:
First step: Decide on which “outcome” your group will study
You and your fellow group members must pick a specific “outcome” (e.g., any disease or health
event) that interests you. This should be the outcome that your group chose for your group
presentation.
Second step: Choosing an “exposure” of interest
Choose an exposure that you are interested to examine whether or not has an association with
your chosen outcome of interest (e.g., if you have chosen diabetes as your outcome, you might
be interested in any association between diabetes and weekly fast food consumption
(exposure)).
Third step: Designing a study for your exposure/outcome association
Study population
Pick a population to conduct your study in (you will NOT actually be conducting this
study, so any population that interests you would be acceptable) (e.g., CSUN, Los
Angeles, the U.S., another specific country/population)
Identify any specific group you would/would not want to include in your study if
applicable (e.g., study in only men, teenagers, only elderly African-American women)
Study design
– Choose an appropriate study design to investigate your chosen association given what
we have discussed in class.
Fourth step: Conducting (in theory) your study
Data collection
What method/methods would you use to collect your data? (e.g., telephone interviews?
Online questionnaires? Existing data? It is often best to choose ONE method of data
collection to make sure you are collecting data consistently)
How would you gain specific information about your outcome/exposure of interest? o If
you are actively collecting data, what questions would you ask?
Study process
Describe the steps/methods you would use to conduct your particular study, given your
chosen study design (e.g., are you grouping people into exposed/unexposed and then
following to see if disease develops? Are you asking people at one point in time about
both their exposure and disease status?)
Given your chosen study design, which epidemiologic measure that we’ve discussed
(e.g., risk ratio, correlation, prevalence ratio, odds ratio) would you be able to calculate?
(You will NOT have to calculate the measure)
Fifth step: Assessing your study
Assessing strengths and weaknesses
– Identify any strengths/advantages of your study given your chosen study design, data
collection method and outcome/exposure of interest
Identify any weakness/disadvantages/limitations of your study given your chosen study
design, data collection method and outcome/exposure of interest
Potential biases
– Which possible biases might you be concerned about in your study given your chosen
design, data collection method and outcome/exposure of interest?
The steps above must be applied to your study design process/chosen exposure/chosen
outcome. For example, do not just list the potential biases present in your study without a brief
explanation of why they would be relevant for your particular study/exposure/outcome.
