Eight step model
The eight-step ethical decision-making model is a tool that is used to assist individuals in
making good ethical decisions. It begins with the identification of the problem than developing
alternatives and evaluating which option is the best fit for the course of action. The eight-step
ethical decision-making model is made up of various steps that are necessary towards making the
right decision. The steps are gathering the facts, defining the ethical issue, understanding the
perspective of different stakeholders, and identify the consequences to various stakeholders
(Pope, & Vasquez, 2016). Applying steps one to four to generate ethical alternatives, select and
implement an ethical course of action, monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the course of
action and the last step is to modify and continue to assess the ethical plan if feasible.
By the use of such steps, it is necessary to understand that in case there are consequences
if the therapist decides not to let the client leave and when he takes him back to the session. The
client might commit suicide if he leaves when he is taken back, he might harm the therapist
(Stiggelbout, Pieterse, & De Haes, 2015). The best alternative is to take the client and ensure full
control of him. It is essential that the therapist tries his best to monitor the movement of the
client rather than leaving him to walk out.
Alternative decision-making model
There is an alternative decision-making model that can be utilized in this case study to
solve the situation. It is the bounded rationality model also known as the administrative man
model or the five-step model. The steps to be utilized are identifying the situation, and a decision

needed, identify and discuss essential criteria, consider possible situations, possible situations
together with outcomes, and then choosing the best option (Corey, 2017).
Cultural and social orientation in the case study
One cultural and social orientation that can be considered in this case is on how society
perceives those people who have mental issues and plan to commit suicide. People think that
when you want to commit suicide, you are not worthy again in the society, but the fact is that
everybody is as important as anyone else and has the right to live (Pope, & Vasquez, 2016).
Statement of dual relationships or multiple relationship issues in the study
A dual relationship is when a therapist gets involved in a non-professional relationship
with their client. Such a relationship might be informed of counselling family members of the
client, befriending the current client (Corey, 2017). In this case, the dual relationship might
emerge when the client sympathizes with the client not to go and promises something that seems
to bring the client near to the therapist to win him.

Ethical decision-making process
The ethical decision-making process is the procedure of choosing and figuring out
alternatives in a method which is logical with the ethical principles. When making ethical
decisions, commitment is required because it is the zeal to do things in the right manner
regardless of the cost.
Bowens Ethical Decision-Making Model is used for strategic decision making. It is
specially created to assist with management issues, whereby, it helps specialists to avoid making
wrong decisions in a management process to prevent ethical conflicts and disputes in the
organization. In Bowens Ethical Decision-Making Model, it ensures that professionals in the
organization are autonomous, when communicating the choice, it considers ethical questions and
also when making a decision it should consider the critical duties to the public and the client.
Alternative Considerations
Decision tree analysis can be a useful item for figuring out alternatives involved in
making ethical decisions. Looking at each potential outcome, consideration and possible action
can be crucial in making a decision towards which option is more reasonable to be consistent
with your moral belief and ethical value.
Diversity Issues
Assisting people in making ethical decisions is always a challenging task. Ethical
decisions often rotate within end-of-life problems which need acknowledgment of the person
being able to make it through whereby, if they are not able to it will be considered as a failure.
When such adversities are combined with ineffective communicating skills associated with

cultural unawareness and insensitivity, the results can be overwhelming to the decision-making
process.
Dual Relationships and Multiple Role Relationships
Dual relationships are a widespread issue that can be described as when a client and
therapist indulge in multiple relationships. These relationships could involve an online
relationship, friendship, romantic relationship, a family member or a sexual relationship. It can
be argued if some of these relationships are tolerable to manage while in a patient and therapist
relationship because of ethical guidelines, and principles that may be violated to take part in such
relationships.
Ethical Principles conflicts this ethical decision based on the difficulty that should take
into consideration the many ethical guidelines and principles the could profoundly be broken if a
therapist can take part in multiple relationships with a client.
In the code of ethics for social workers, the first value that a social worker is supposed to
follow is respect for the worth of a person and inherent dignity. The ethical value involves the
assumptions that a social worker has their rights to make their own decisions from their own free
will and should be given the respect that they deserve. Whereby, if a social worker and a client
are interested in entering into a dual relationship with each other, they are free to do so as long as
it is outside of a social work setting because they also have their rights and reasons to do so.

APA Code of Ethics Principles
One of the principles is beneficence and nonmaleficence. According to this principle,
the psychologist should benefit and take care of those that they work for. This implies that
they should safeguard the welfare of their colleagues and other individuals affected by their
work. The second one is fidelity and responsibility which shows how the psychologist should
know their scientific responsibilities. The third one is integrity which is all about honesty,
accuracy, and truth when it comes to science education. Fourth is justice which is respectful
of all people and their rights. The fifth principle all about respect for people’s rights and
dignity. There are two principles that might apply to the case study vignettes ethical conflict.
One is fidelity and responsibility and the other one is justice. This is because no matter the
situation people must be treated with justice and the scientists should be responsible. When
looking at the case, the professor has to choose to teach new things or leave the institution.
Before deciding, she must consider her responsibilities to the students. She also needs to
consider justice because the students have the right to learn new things just like other students
in different institutions.
APA Code of Ethical Standards
Below are the APA codes of ethical standards. One is resolving ethical issues which
are an important section that shows how psychologist should resolve conflicts that affect their
ethical code of psychology. Second is competence which is a standard that guide psychologist
on how to define their own competence. Third is on human relation which is very essential
which comes to the different approaches when working with people in helping fields. Fourth
is known as privacy and confidentiality. This standard enables the psychologist to maintain
confidence and maintain patient privacy. According to the American Psychological

Association, advertising and other public statement code of ethics standard enable the
psychologist to advertise their practices and make other public statements. The sixth standard
is record keeping and fees which is there to enhance the maintenance of professional records.
The seventh standard is education and training which a well-designed program to train the
upcoming psychologists. Research and publication is another APA ethical standard that
enhances the provision of accurate information from the research study. Assessment
standards are developed to address any guidelines used during the assessments. The last of
which is number ten is therapy which addresses those patients in need of therapy.
Competence, human relations, and education and training can apply to this case study
vignette’s ethical conflict. When looking at competence, the professor has done little effort to
maintain her competence. On education and training, the professor is teaching child
psychology to future psychology thus she needs to observe this standard. Human relation is
all about helping fields and in this case, the students need to learn how to deal with children.
Culture and Social Orientation
When looking at the cultural and social orientation aspects from the case, they need to
be considered in a significant way. Citing old materials is essential since the information is
still variable but it is less likely to be applicable to the current society. Students need to relate
what they learn in class with their daily activities. An example, if they are taught about
mental illnesses, the lesson becomes interesting when they are given real-life examples. This
implies that the professor could consider both the old and new citations.

Case Study Abstract
The field of psychology primarily deals with people (mind and behavior). and thus is very
sensitive. As such there is a code of ethics that guides and regulates the operations of people in
this field. The application and training of these ethics is especially important among educators in
the field of psychology since they are involved in training the professionals who directly interact
with patients. This project aims to analyze ethics in the field of education through a case analysis
of professor Tiquaited, an educator in the field of psychology stuck in the past, a move that has
raised concern among his students. The analysis process will seek to create an ethical strategy
which will be used to address ethical issues in the case study while relating them to ethical
concepts in the field of psychology.
Detailed Case Study Description
The case study selected for this project seeks to examine ethical issues in psychology
from a classroom perspective. According to this case, Ann Tiquaited is a professor in the field of
child psychology. As a professional she currently works as an educator taking psychology
students through a child psychology course. However in her lessons Professor Tiquaited seem to
be stuck in the past only relying on material used in her doctoral training as her primary resource.
Tiquaited undertook her doctoral studies in the 80s and although the material she has
could still be viable, a lot has transpired in the field of child psychology since then. Simply
majoring in this classic material means that students in this class do not get to collectively learn
and benefit from strides made in the field since then which makes them ill prepared for their
profession.

Given these circumstances, students taking Tiquaited’s class, more so those interested in
pursuing this course further, have expressed concerns in the professor’s approach. They see her
approach as a mechanism that denies them the opportunity to review significant research that has
been conducted in the period of almost four decades since the professor undertook her doctorate.
Knowing the great achievements in the field such as evidence based approaches and practices,
they fear that they will be ill prepared to take the course to the next level. Further these students
are concerned with the professor’s approach to the course and response to their query concerning
the coverage of new material. They assert that the professor continues to assign reading materials
that are almost four decades old and tell the students to read current material on their own. Her
view is informed by the belief that they cannot cover all that material in the little time assigned
for classes since the material available is too broad and numerous and thus the students have to
undertake their own personal studies.
The Ethical Conflict
An examination of this case study involving Tiquaited and her students in child
psychology course shows that there are a number of ethical issues. The first has to do with the
issue of competence more specifically maintaining competence. The fact that the primary
material that the professor uses for his course is the same material she learnt almost four decades
ago shows that, as a professional psychologist, she has made very little if any effort to maintain
her competence. Over the decades various changes have taken place in the field and numerous
studies have been undertaken which have given birth evidence based practice, however, the
professor does not acknowledge these changes.

The psychologist code of ethics requires professionals to actively engage in ongoing
efforts to maintain their level of competence (American Psychological Association, 2017). The
professor however does not display any indication that she has been committed to maintaining
her competence. Further on the same area of competence, professionals are required to work and
base their operations on knowledge of the professional discipline and scientific knowledge.
However in the professor’s case, she has made little attempt to incorporate scientific and
professionals development in the field in almost four decades
The other ethical conflict that this case study exemplifies is based on educations and
training. According to the American Psychological Association, (2017) education and training
programs should be designed in a way that ensures students receive proper knowledge and
experience required to successfully complete the course and receive licensing. In the professor’s
case ignoring current material made her students uneasy and concerned about their qualification.
Further these professionals are required to ensure accuracy in their teaching. They therefore are
tasked with the responsibility of reviewing their syllabus and ensuring that they correctly
represent the subject matter. To accomplish this all the material in a particular subject area such
as the field of child psychology should be reviewed to ensure the require success. In this case
since the professor has not endeavored to include recent material, they represent the course partly
thus failing the accuracy test.

Overview
The final project for this course is the creation of a case study analysis. The final product represents an authentic
demonstration of competency. This competency is shown by the development of specific skill sets including: case study
identification, understanding ethical conflict in a psychology-related work settings, increased knowledge in the origin and
rationale for ethics orientation in the psychology profession, specific knowledge of the core ethical principles that govern
professional behavior, an overview of specific standards as they apply to sub-specialties in psychology, a practical model
for ethical decision making, and consideration of alternative decision-making models. The project is divided into four
milestones, which will be submitted at various points throughout the course to scaffold learning and ensure quality final
submissions. These milestones will be submitted in Modules Two, Three, Five, and Seven. The final product will be
submitted in Module Nine.
By understanding the ethical principles of the psychology profession, you will learn how to inform your decision making
when it comes to protecting and serving the populations we serve. It is also important that the contemporary
