Specifications for Argumentative Research Essay
For your first draft of this project, you should now have
assembled most of the sources you will need to compose a
thesis-driven, research-based essay. You will have developed
your research question into a thesis that fits the scope of the
project: that is, it should be one that is arguable within a six- to
eight-page essay. Once again, this essay’s topic should fall into
the broader category of “social problems” and must come to a
reasonable conclusion about the issue you engage. The goal of
this project should be to present an educated hypothesis that is
supported by reliable sources. Ideally, for an essay of this length
and scope, ten to twelve varied sources are expected.
Draft One: As a draft, this document should be more than a
mere “sketch” of the issue: it should fully map out your intended
thesis and goals, argumentation, sources, and conclusion. It is
meant to span the full scope of the final essay; however, it is
understood that more information can be added later: ideas
might be more fully realized, and sources might be reconsidered
before the final draft is submitted. The draft is your opportunity
to explore the subject and visualize the final project without the
anxiety of reaching for perfection. My evaluation of your draft
may be extensive, but it is meant to help you rethink aspects of
your argument, improve upon it, and polish it into an essay you
can be proud of—and one you can learn from. In the broadest
sense, the idea behind self-motivated research is self-paced
learning. Your sources should be duly acknowledged with signal
phrases and parenthetical citations. A Works Cited should
accompany the first draft.
Draft One is due April 4th
Format: As customary, your draft should be formatted with one-
inch margins, lines are double spaced, font is 12-point in either
Times New Roman, Calibri, or Arial. A header with your name,
course/section, and the date should appear in the upper, left
margin. No page numbers are necessary.
Draft Two: The second edition of your document should
respond to my recommendations and edits—as well as those
edits you acquire during peer review. By this point you have had
time to fine-tune the details of your argument, finalize sources,
and prepare a Works Cited. Draft Two is due on April 25″, the
last day of classes.
Presentation: On exam day, each of you will present your
findings in a 10-15-minute presentation. The challenge here will
be to condense the information from your essay into a much
shorter, presentable version. You are permitted to use a slide
(Power Point) presentation, soundbites and other audio-visual
materials within reason. Photographs, illustrations, and any other
visuals are particularly helpful, so be creative!
