The Heart of Andes
The Heart of the Andes is one of the celebrated American great treasures that explicitly
shows God’s wonderful creation. The artistic work is displayed at the town gallery of Art in New
York. It is one of the most filmed and photographed pieces of work. The Heart of the Anders was
done in 1859 using oil and canvas. The iconic painting is about 168 x 302.9 cm and shows the
elegance beauty and grandeur of the South American mountain ranges – the Andes. Frederic
Edwin Church was a renowned American landscape painter whose vision and talent contributed
to his place within the pantheon of Hudson Valley School of Arts painters. The painting idea
developed on the return journey to South America in 1857 as he professionally drew what he saw
during a nine-week journey in Ecuador.
The painting was first launched in New York on April 27, 1859, and automatically taken
to the museum. Light was provided by gas to make the painting visible even in the darkness. The
painting pulled a lot of attention where thousands of people were willing to pay money for the
artistic work. The painting was displayed in London and got a lot of admiration. The painting
gave a reflection of creation as conceived by God.
The artist’s idea was directed by the knowledge that the creation he painted was part of
God’s perception in the explored world in South America. The purpose of the landscape painting
was to show truths of a bigger plan and purpose and give the audience a deep spiritual
experience of nature. The decision to paint the ranges of South America arose from the
realization that it was a paradise that was unaltered by civilization and was thought to carry
characteristics of divine providence. It also had rich flora and fauna (Vinet, 2017). According to
the artist, the painting was a way of describing and classifying things that were forgotten and

have specific focal point.
The sky is almost full of dark mountain tops and heavy clouds, signifying the metaphoric
possibility of the painting and real mountain. The center of the surface is heart shaped, which
corresponds to rigorous bilateral symmetry. The painting emphasizes the atmospheric light
effects with scientific accuracy, which renders its tints more harmonious and softens its effects.
The painting incorporates birds and flowers of all colors and sunny slopes; it shows objects in
motion and graphics sketching illustrations and creative art illustrations (Gould, 2011). The
brushstrokes and the meticulous touch articulate the character of specific types of vegetation
geological formations. The painting has a smooth finish that captures the eye of admirers making
drawing attention to itself. The art depicts the importance of religion and shows the wonders of

The artist was inspired by writings from people who had traveled to South America who
detailed the descriptions of various climates. The topics in the writings were thought to be of

2014). It provided a wonderful scene where creation was so wonderful and everything depended
on each other. The painting was manifesting the power of the divine being who created
wonderfully and gave life to everything. The artist took the role of a priest, a scientist, an
explorer, and an artist serving the purpose of joining nature and civilization between God and the
people (Novak, 2007). The piece of work was exemplary excellent in manifesting its purpose of
the importance of religion as it praises creation, giving credit to the creator.

Comparison
The Birth of Venus by Botticelli is, without doubt, a world masterpiece that is one of the
most famous and appreciated works of art. The art is important because of its painterly
contributions to the major art movement. The Birth of Venus was painted at the end of medieval
values and it stresses the importance of individualism, humanism and the natural world.
Botticelli, when painting the art, used a bright color that the allegory of spring does not have. It
uses a mixture of egg yolk and light paint that makes it look like a fresco; the light color differs
with the paintings.
The colors used create a calming sensation when looking at the painting (Gardner &
Kleiner, 2010). The use of blue and greens creates the painting’s calming nature. The ocean is
painted blue-green, which is more muted than the bright blues in other paintings. Botticelli
painted Venus with elegant bends and long, streaming hair. She is beautiful to the point that, at
first, one fails to notice that her neck is excessively long or that her arms are unnaturally
appended to her body. Unlike most modern painters, Botticelli did not concentrate on getting the
viewpoint right. His figures are drifting on closely examining the image. The inclination is that
the work could easily compare to its accuracy. The two artistic works do not focus more on the
vocal point of the painting but focus more on the accuracy of the painting. Both works use bright
colors. Both paintings are iconic, creating massive public sensations and wows. The birth of
Venus and the Heart of Andes receive massive public admiration globally up to date due to the
artists’ dexterity, professionalism and skills.
