A2: Individual Report Help Sheet
It is important to stress that this help sheet is just a guideline, it is not a definitive
framework for you to base your report on. There is not just one approach to the TASKS
set. This assignment is an opportunity for you to be able to demonstrate not only
learning from the MBA programme but also your ability to address an international
business strategic question faced by companies in a very competitive global industry.
Please take note of the following:
It is crucial that read and clearly understand the case study, it describes and
gives an overview of the global steel industry and problems faced by companies
primarily by the recession of 2008; but not entirely because there are also other
factors such as environmental pressures. Also, the case study attempts to
describe the rationale for Severstal’s international strategy. This may sound an
obvious point, but take your time to think about what the TASKS are asking you.
We expect evidence of a well-planned, organised and well-structured piece of
work including you presenting clear conclusions.
Content and coherence: please pay attention to the relevance of the content of
your work to the TASKS’ sets; have the issues raised in the TASKS been squarely
and clearly answered? To what extent does the content develop coherent themes
of argument in addressing the issues and the final conclusions?
Analytical standard: At Masters level, we would like to see an emphasis on analysis
rather than purely descriptive details; and a strong application of theoretical
concepts and techniques.
Presentation and referencing: Consider the use of diagrams and figures, quality of
academic writing and use of English. Sources must be correctly referenced, and
there needs to be a systematic bibliography at the end. Be aware that plagiarism,
in the form of copying from unattributed sources or from other students, will result
in penalties including failure.
Simply put the TASKS are about international strategies in a changing global market. A
well-structured report is crucial, hopefully the following points may help you.
1. It will be important for you, when addressing TASK A, to have a clear
understanding of the strategic environment of the global steel industry, so a
structured approach would be essential utilising some form of framework from the
MBA Course that takes into factors such as:
Post Kyoto & Paris accords and governments trade policies.
Relative importance of different regional markets.
Economic trends.
There will be more issues you will find from conducting your own research.
Think of a suitable industry analysis you could use here to structure your report. We
are not going to suggest suitable industry analyses as this should come from your own
learning. Think about the work you have done in the Business Schools up until now,
the approach to assessment 1 and your own research; all this should give you the
tools you need to approach this assessment in a strong and confident manner.
2. In addressing TASK B you should also take a structured approach, utilising a
suitable model / framework to identify the main international drivers to be evaluated,
in order to understand the context in which Severstal have to operate and survive.
It is important to address the extent of globalisation in terms of integrated world-wide
strategy with standardised products in pursuit of global economies, in order to explain
the rationale and efficacy of Severstal international strategy with regards the
challenges from the economic shock of the 2008 Recession and the underlying
international drivers of the global steel industry.
You could, in addition utilise models such as Porter’s five forces to assist in analysing
the competitive environment of the global steel industry – you might want to add a 6th
force under the heading of government policies.
3. The case study is quite extensive but it was written a few years ago, so it would be
great to supplement your answers with some additional independent research in
order to add greater value to your answer.
4. Finally, you should be able to make points with COHERENT REASONS and
JUSTIFICATION. We are looking for evidence and sound arguments. Please
make sure you have summaries for both TASKS A & B and to have a final
concluding section.

Assignment Marking Criteria
While marking your assignment we will be looking for evidence for how well you have
addressed the question / issues. The following part explains the key points you should
consider in preparing your assignment. It is also important to review the specifications
and guidelines outlined in your unit handbook, such as ‘Learning outcomes’ along with
the ‘Assessment Criteria’, ‘the Assignment Strategy’, etc.
1. Introduction: A brief introduction that provides the background and purpose of the
report or its objectives, and how the report is structured. Interpreting the question
– this ideally should be clear within the introduction along with background / context.
2. Addressing the question / topic: The main body of the report where the
question is addressed. (This part may have a few sections / sub-sections). The
key criteria here include:
a. Research – evidence of systematic research approach, depth and breadth
of research undertaken; application of appropriate conceptual (theoretical /
empirical) framework(s), etc.
b. Analysis – well focussed on answering the question, depth and clarity of
argument, evidence of critical engagement, organising / summarising
collected information (e.g. in Tables, Graphs, trends, etc.); answering the
questions/tasks fully.
3. Conclusion and recommendations: A clear, concise, and relevant conclusion
(and recommendations where appropriate). A conclusion where the key points that
have emerged from the discussion are summarised, implications and where further
investigation may be appropriate, are stated. Clear and practical recommendations
that emerge from the findings and the conclusion.
4. Scholarly practice – a proper referencing within the report (citations), employing
appropriate International Business/ Global Marketing vocabulary, etc., the quality
of the Reference section. (Harvard style of referencing).
5. Presentation: Neat layout, and headings / sub-headings where appropriate.
Pages should be numbered; and also Tables and Figures numbered and labelled
sequentially and appropriately. Sources of Tables and Figures should be indicated
for each Table and Figure. Clarity of expression (appropriate language, grammar,
spelling, etc.). Length of the report should be 3,500 (+/-10%) without including
the reference section. Word-count at the end of the report. No attachments /
appendices allowed.
Please note that the above does not necessarily provide you with the headings /
subheadings to be used in your report. While generic headings such as ‘Introduction’,
‘Conclusion’, and ‘Recommendations’ would be appropriate and could be used in your
report, other headings / subheadings would emerge from the issues you are
researching. Headings / subheadings give a logical, sequential, and meaningful
structure for your report.
