And the book I made is a story called “Doris Boba Adventure”, and this is the story.

Doris Boba Adventure

1

Doris is a 12 years old mermaid living under the sea…

2

Today is Friday, the day daddy comes back from his business trip!

Daddy brings back the drink called boba!

This is the first time Doris ever tried boba, and she loved it!

3

Boba is milk tea with pearls.

Doris loves how smoothly black tea mixes with milk, and the pearls are like chewy mochi.

4

SLURRRRRRRP!

Doris finishes her first boba but she’s still craving for more.

5

Doris asks the Blowfish, who loves to eat, do you know any boba place?

Blowfish says bluuuuuuu….

Doris asks the shark who has been everywhere, do you know any boba place?

Shark says shhhh…

6

Doris asks the sea turtle who knows everything, do you know any boba place?

Sea turtle says hmmm…

7

Doris is sad because it seems like no one knows.

8

She met her friend, Edward the mermaid. Edward is on his way to find this boba place at the beach, which he had heard they have the best boba in the world.

9

Edward asks Doris, the blowfish, the shark and the sea turtle to join him!

Doris says, yes!

Blowfish says, blooooooo!

shark says, sharrrrrryesssss!

sea turtle, heheheyeaaa!

10

They follow the map that Edward has.

11

And they keep swimming.

Doris: I can see the light from the shore!

12

When they arrived at the beach, the boba shop welcomed them with the best boba in the world! Write an 6-8 page critical rationale arguing why your children’s book project is a worthy
addition to the genre of Children’s Literature. Compare your book to at least three
books, articles or essays we’ve read in class, in terms of theme, style, characterization,
setting, or other elements that you find are typical of the children’s literature genre. How
is your work an example of the children’s literary canon, or why is it different, and thus an
even more deserving entry into the genre? How does it measure up to the varying
definitions of children’s literature?
Points to consider:
How did your experience with the MX kids help to affirm or challenge the ideas we read
about for class? How does your picture book project draw upon/confront/uphold these
themes and theories? How does your book project compare to/complement/challenge
the books we’ve read in class? Provide specific examples from the texts and essays
we’ve read in class to illustrate and support your argument.
Example: Children’s Literature still needs to work on offering a more accurate
representation of the diverse cultures, needs and experiences of young readers. The
books we’ve read in class still demonstrate a mostly homogeneous classist perspective
that can alienate young readers. My book project seeks a more inclusive audience of
readers.

Guidelines
1. The papers must be typed, and double spaced using 12 point Times New Roman
Font with 1″ margins on all sides. Staple. Number your pages.
2. Your paper must include the essentials of effective critical writing: a strong thesis
and introduction, a clear organization and overall structure, a thoughtful use of
support for claims (in the form of direct quotations, paraphrases, and other
textual references), careful transitions between sections, and a well-thought-out
conclusion.
3. Language should be clean, polished and employ a strong authorial tone.
4. Please include a Works Cited page of your sources used.
Your paper should use at least THREE sources from the essays and texts we’ve
read in class.
I will be looking for the following in evaluating your critical rationale:
1. Evidence that you are thinking critically and creatively about the texts you are
discussing.
2. Your own critical ideas/interpretations. Do more than summarize our class
discussion.
3. A clear, critical argument that is articulated in a thesis statement in the first
paragraph.
4. Textual support in form of quotations and examples from the text(s) under
discussion. Do not include quotes without your own ideas supporting that quote.
5. Logical organization, including an introduction and conclusion.
6. The present tense-when writing about literature, always use the present tense.
7. Spelling/grammar. Spellchecking alone does not constitute proofreading.
8. If you go to the LRC to have your paper proofread and critiqued, attach a note
from the LRC coach for additional credit.
