COMP 2000 – Research Paper Overview
Our main task this semester will be a research project that investigates some aspect of
writing, literacy, language, or discourse. Below you’ll find an overview of this project,
and its several components. The first half of the semester will introduce the class to some
of the issues and research methods of the academic field that studies writing and language
(called “Rhetoric and Composition”), and is the time during which students will identify
a research question to investigate the rest of the semester. Students will conduct research,
present their findings in a class presentation, and submit a written paper of approximately
ten to twelve pages.
Assignment Rationale
There are several purposes for this project:
• You will improve your ability to craft and analyze arguments, as well as collect
and interpret evidence to support your assertions.
• You will gain intimate knowledge of a writing-related issue, and gain general
knowledge of a host of other issues that your classmates have researched. This
will help you better understand what it is to write and to be a writer, leaving you
more prepared for a wider range of future writing tasks.
• You will have what for some of you may be your first hands-on experience with
college-level research of the sort professors and professionals do.
• You will learn to do the kind of reading that contributes to success in college.
• You may better be able to help other writers in the future.
• Your study of writing may be significant to the field of Rhetoric and
Composition. With further development, such findings might be publishable in
one of the field’s journals.
• Your work could be showcased in the Farquhar Student Journal or the
Undergraduate Research Symposium here at NSU.
Assignment Description
Good research does not begin with writing the final paper. In the course of producing
your research paper, you will do the following:
• identify a viable research question (e.g., how do writers think up what to say?),
• plan a way to do firsthand research on the question (e.g., textual analysis, survey,
interview, a case study, etc.),
• conduct the research and analyze the results,
• draw conclusions about answers to your question and what they might mean, and
• report that research to the class as a whole (in your presentation), and
• submit your research to the instructor (in your paper).
There are a few different graded assignments leading up to the actual paper. Below are
short descriptions of these assignments (individual assignment sheets are available on
Blackboard for each with more detail).
Mason

Research Journal—a journal in which you track and reflect on your research;
Prompts are provided to get you to think about various aspects of writing that may
become important to your research. This journal will be kept online and be
accessible to only you and Dr. Mason.
Research Proposal—an outline of your research question, methods of
investigating it, and plans for doing the research
Annotated Bibliography—a list of sources with summaries that help you
understand and keep track of the current conversation on your topic
Conference Presentation—a report introducing the class to your research
Conference Paper—a 10 to 12-page paper reporting your research and arguing for
a given interpretation of your findings
Your first task is to identify a question of interest to you that builds on the conversations
going on in our textbook. Pay attention to the course readings and the world around you
to help you identify issues that are interesting, timely, and of some significance to the
field. In the first seven weeks, you will need to settle on your issue/question of choice,
assisted by your reading and class discussions. The thought pieces you write in response
to readings are a good place to pose questions that might become your research topic.
Don’t shortchange the process of invention or discovery by not putting time into these
early assignments, or making full use of class time to raise issues and ask questions.
Grading Criteria
The grading criteria published in the syllabus are a general guide to how this assignment
will be graded. The real standard to which all research is put is this: does it make a
contribution to the conversation? If you’ve identified a good research question, collected
and analyzed evidence insightfully, and presented your findings persuasively, you will
have made such a contribution.
How to Submit this Assignment
Upload your drafts to the project dropbox in Blackboard by the due date. Drafts will also
be borught in hardcopy to class for a writing workshop.
